Getting married in the middle of Melbourne in a gorgeous, converted woollen mill, Kathryn and James threw an urban yet relaxed celebration! Keeping things simple, they held everything in one spot and let the details shine. Marie-Luise captured their day.
Kathryn travelled to Perth from Melbourne for her friends birthday party, and there met James. She shares, ”We then did many trips back and forth before I moved to Perth about a year later. James proposed at our house before taking me for a surprise stay at the Como The Treasury.”
With a clean silhouette but beautiful detailing, the bride wore a Rosa Clara lace, beaded gown. She tells, ”It was the total opposite of what I imagined I would choose, but I loved the scallop detail in the lace and train. It did need quite a lot of alterations and Faith from Whitework Bridal did such an incredible job – she was meticulous with the delicate lace!” The groom wore a tailored, navy suit with white shirt from Institchu.
Photographer Marie-Luise was on hand to capture this urban wedding. Kathryn remembers, ”We loved having Marie-Luise as our photographer. She was relaxed, professional and gave us some great direction (which we needed!). Marie understood that we wanted a fairly natural style of photo in an urban setting, which I think she did a great job of achieving. We also loved all the photos that she took of guests at the wedding.”
In the neutral and open space at The Wool Mill, the flowers packed a punch. The bride shares, ”I really just chose a colour palette of blush and burgundy and asked for roses in the bridal bouquet. I also wanted black plinths with lots of blooms and foliage for the ceremony backdrop. Kim from Anatomy of Flowers worked her magic. I loved what she came up with for the day!”
Inner-city, yet relaxed was the desired feel for the day. The Wool Mill provided all the goods! Kathryn tells, ”We were looking for a venue where we could hold both the ceremony and reception because we liked the idea of there not being a break between the two and just allowing guests to start enjoying the party. We wanted a refined industrial space that was central to the city, as we knew we would have a lot of guests travelling for the day. The Wool Mill was also just down the road from where I used to live in East Brunswick, so I was already very familiar with that area of Melbourne.”
Held indoors, in front of the flower plinths covered in roses, the bride and groom said their vows. Remembering, Kathryn shares, ”We wanted a ceremony that reflected us as a couple. Our celebrant was Sarita The Celebrant. We really liked her style which was warm and light-hearted. She also gave us great advice when she strongly recommended that we write part of our vows, which I am really glad that we did. We both enjoy wine and going to on trips to different wineries, so as part of the ceremony we enclosed a good bottle of Margaret River red wine and pre-written letters to each other in a wooden box, which we hammered shut. The plan is that we will open the box on an anniversary in years to come to enjoy the wine and read the letters.” The bride walked down the aisle with her mum and dad to ‘Wedding Song’, by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Having originally come from opposite sides of Australia, the bride and groom prepared for many guests travelling for their city wedding. They share, ”The best part of the day was all of our friends and family from near and far being together in the same place. It was something really special for us. Two of our friends got engaged on their walk home from the wedding!”
Thrilled with their venue choice, it turned out that not only was it the perfect spot for the bride and groom, but also a great source of top-notch vendors! Kathryn tells, ”The Wool Mill were a great vendor. The people working directly for them were all amazing and ensured that everything stayed on track on the lead-up and also on the day of the wedding. The best part about them is they also put us in contact with other great vendors, like CNK Catering, Marie-Luise, Anatomy of Flowers, LoveCo Hair & Beauty and Sarita The Celebrant. My favourite part of the wedding planning was feeling like The Wool Mill had everything in hand. They made planning a wedding in Melbourne while based in Perth seem really easy.”
Thank you to our gorgeous bride and groom for sharing your beautiful day with us, and congratulations! Thank you also to Marie-Luise for your beautiful images.
