Huvafen Fushi – nature’s neon night party  

Forget star gazing, at Huvafen Fushi in the Maldives you will look down rather than up for the most memorable after dark activity. The five star resort is famous for its underwater spa, but in my opinion it’s when the sun sets and you descend into the spa that things really get exciting. The Night Aquarium experience feels completely out of this world. Glowing coral sits just beyond the glass walls of the spa, a fluoro garden under the sea. It’s nature’s neon night party and truly a sight to behold. With a glass of champagne in hand, settle in to watch the sea life’s nightly shenanigans. In daytime hours, clever mirrors set up underneath the massage tables reflect the underwater world back at you so it’s worth booking in for a couples massage too. If you’re feeling more adventurous, the resort has also just started night snorkelling excursions though you won’t be able to take the champagne with you for that excursion!

Sabi Sabi – the wildest night ever

Safari by starlight. Now that’s a date night. Sabi Sabi private reserve in Kruger National Park redefined luxury in South Africa. Leave the cameras and phones when you head out at sunset. You might stop briefly for gin and tonics mixed right on top of your vehicle but soon you’ll be driving through Kruger because after dark is when the animals really come out to play. And hunt. On our night drive we followed five female lions pursuing prey. They weren’t successful, but the sound of them quenching their thirst in a water hole will always echo in my brain.

The trackers will use spotlights when needed but it’s a magical experience to survey your surroundings by the brightness of thousands of stars alone. Return to Earth Lodge for an outdoor dinner on the lawn or your own degustation in your rammed earth villa.

Turtle Island – float and feast

I’m willing to bet you’ve never had a private pontoon dining experience before? Fiji’s Turtle Island certainly knows how to turn on the charm. With 17 private beaches, on demand champagne and golf carts to ferry guests to their beach for the day, they know how to do romance well by day. But this evening experience is extra special. As other guests walk down to dinner on the sand, we’re whisked away to the jetty. A boat putters us out to the pontoon in no time. By day we jumped off the pontoon to snorkel, but at night, it’s set with a table for two. We feast on produce fresh from the island and the sea, all by candlelight. There’s no boats or other guests anywhere to be seen. It’s just us, the lapping of gentle waves and a radio to signal the dockman when we’re ready to return to shore.
