Beach babes, it’s time for a honeymoon! Have you got your heart set on saying I do then setting off on a tropical getaway? Lucky for you, Australia has plenty of islands to choose from, but if you’re after a classic, Hamilton Island has a honeymoon for every type of traveller.

Why Hamilton Island

If you’ve got the Great Barrier Reef on your bucket list, get ready to tick it off. Hamilton Island is a great jumping off point for exploring the Whitsundays, with its own airport and regular direct flights from several Australian capital cities (please check the latest flight schedules/travel requirements as changes have been made due to COVID-19). There are plenty of snorkelling tours or diving expeditions out on the reef, although many guests don’t even leave the white sandy island shores, instead making the most of the world class beaches on your doorstep. One beach that’s worth venturing off the island for is Whitehaven Beach. The stunning 7km stretch of sand is on nearby Whitsunday Island, get there by boat, seaplane or helicopter.

Where to stay

Whether you’re keen to settle in for a week with a sensible budget or splash out on a seriously epic weekend, unlike other islands in the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island has plenty of different options for where you rest your head. Here’s a few ideas on how you can honeymoon:

Entry level

Whether you spent your pennies on the big day, or are saving them for the next grand adventure (hello house deposit!), there’s no shame in an economically astute honeymoon. And yes, you can do that at Hamilton Island. This certainly isn’t camping or motel living, it’s still an island getaway, and that does add to the price tag, but a popular choice for travellers trying to keep costs down is the Reef View Hotel. Looking down onto Catseye Beach, the hotel is all about laid back beach getaways. Make the most of the catamarans, kayaks, SUP and snorkelling equipment in the ocean or retreat to the 34m pool.

Mid range

The name says it all when you book in to stay at the Beach Club. This boutique hotel sits right on Catseye Beach and nails beach chic. It’s all about rattan and ocean views at these one bedroom rooms with private terraces looking out to the Coral Sea. The Beach Club is adults only, so if that’s high on the priority list, remember much of Hamilton Island is family friendly! Beach Club guests have a la carte breakfast included each day and get access to the same non-motorised water sports equipment as those staying at the Reef View Hotel.

One word. Qualia. Okay a few more words. Private villa. Infinity plunge pools. Fine dining. Long considered the place to celebrate special occasions, Qualia’s pavilions are the stuff of serious honeymoon daydreams. Spend your days pool hopping between your pool if you’re staying in one of the Windward Pavilions and the property’s two infinity pools drinking cocktails, and of course there’s the rest of the island to explore, if you care to leave. It wouldn’t be remiss of you not to. Especially with the private beach, the beach club and the day spa to keep you occupied. Did I mention included in your stay is your own golf buggy to zip around in?

Tempted to jet off to tropical paradise yet? I know I am.

Ms Floral Says: I think most of us could do with a honeymoon or holiday like this right about now! Thanks Lisa for sharing the beauty of Hamilton Island, and its range of accommodation. Something for everyone!

Now she loves nothing more than sharing destinations and tips to help other newlyweds work out how to have the honeymoon of their dreams.

Polka Dot Bride Shop

Whether in Bora Bora, The Maldives, Sri Lanka or Greece, taking that quintessential “cocktail” money shot on your honeymoon is a rite of passage. Nothing says relaxation and romance like a wedge of pineapple wedged onto the side of a glass and a frilly stir stick.

Here are four of Polka Dot Honeymoon‘s favourite cocktail dream honeymoons.

1. Mel & Matt’s Blissful Bora Bora Honeymoon

2. Curtly & Bronson’s Epic City, Sun & Ski Honeymoon in Europe & The Maldives

3. Emily & Paul’s Never-ending Dream European Honeymoon

4. Whitney & Stefan’s Glorious Sri Lankan Honeymoon

Choosing the perfect destination for your honeymoon is one of those good problems to have.

If you’re lucky enough to have too many options to choose from, I have one word to help you make a decision: cocktails.

Sure, some people choose their honeymoon based on the beaches or the weather, but have you ever had a really good Old Fashioned?

If cocktails are enough to sway your decision-making, I’ve done the hard work for you and picked a handful of the world’s best bars to help steer your honeymoon selection – now just keep your fingers crossed for international travel.

New York, USA

Okay, this place was literally named the best bar in the world last year, so I could just end this snippet right now, but let’s dig a little deeper into what makes Dante so cool. For starters, the venue itself has been around since 1915, but don’t worry, you aren’t going to find any dust on the tables here.

This registered New York City landmark, was once a modest Italian café and now boasts world-class cocktails and modern Italian cuisine. And if you needed another reason, Dante is owned by a bunch of Aussies. Bloody ripper! Grab a Negroni and settle in. Everything old is new again at Dante. Find out more here.

Connaught Bar

London, UK

When a bar uses its own gin to mix personalised martinis from a vintage drinks trolley, you know you’re onto a winner. Like Dante, Connaught Bar in Mayfair (yes, that Mayfair) will take you on a journey into the past but with a modern twist. Think old world glamour meets new age decadence. The owners say the bar evokes “English and Irish Cubist art of the 1920s, with a touch of timeless elegance”. Grab a couple of snacks, wave down the trolley and sit back and relax because your only worry now is how dirty or dry you want your martini. Find out more here.

Florería Atlántico

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Okay confession time, I’m not 100% sure this translation is correct, but if it is, the description of Florería Atlántico in Argentina is all kinds of cool: “We are the ones who love wine and cocktails, the sea and fire, flowers and music, cities and their ports, the elegant secluded area and the southern region, mythical monsters and legends to discover.” That’s enough for me right there! This Argentinian bar is among the world’s best. It features, as many of the coolest bars do, a nondescript entry – a florist to be exact. Stroll through the flowers to find a gorgeous bar that is a celebration of Argentinian culture with equally worthy cocktails. The black and white art painted right onto the white walls and mood lighting is the perfect setting for your honeymoon. Cheers. Find out more here.

Black Pearl

Melbourne, Australia

As a Melbourne local, I couldn’t round out this list without including a bar from my home town. The Black Pearl – unlike some of the other bars on this list – is almost a youngster. This funky bar in the hipster suburb of Fitzroy in Melbourne, has been around for 18 years but it’s certainly made a name for itself in a short time. It’s been a tough time for the Melbourne hospitality scene this year, so when the time comes, you best be getting down to the Black Pearl to keep this Melbourne gem alive. Pick your time right and you’ll be able to enjoy some of the finest cocktails in the world while lounging in a comfy sofa in relative peace and quiet, but if you’re more of a party couple, head down on a Saturday night to get a better taste of Melbourne’s night life. Ms Floral Says: A cocktail themed honeymoon is a wonderful idea, either locally in Australia or overseas when we get the chance again! Some excellent finds here. Thanks, Mr H!

About Mr Houndstooth: I am a happily married man. I enjoy a fine whisky, a new suit and swashbuckling around town with my beautiful bride. Looking back on my wedding day always makes me smile, even though it began to rain just as I said ‘I do’.
