A great wedding reception is about more than just a playlist – it’s about energy, timing and knowing how to read the room. Today’s Polka Dot Wisdom feature, award-winning wedding DJ, Jono Leahy of Tubbzmix Entertainment shares his expert insights on choosing the right DJ, planning your wedding music and creating a reception that feels effortless, personal and unforgettable.
Planning a wedding involves many decisions, but few will shape the feeling of your night as powerfully as your choice of DJ. The music, the flow, the timing and the energy all come together to create the celebration that your guests will talk about for years. After more than twenty years behind the decks and recognition as one of the Top 10 Wedding DJs at the Australian Wedding Awards, I have learned exactly what makes a wedding reception truly unforgettable.
Many couples tell me that the entertainment felt like the hardest part to choose, simply because it is not something they book often. This is why I created this guide. It brings together everything couples often ask me, along with the things they rarely think about until the wedding day. Whether you are choosing a DJ, building your playlist, considering guest requests or creating a do not play list, this guide will help you shape a wedding reception that feels fun, personal and completely unique to you.

Choosing the Right DJ
Hiring a wedding DJ is not just about finding someone who owns speakers. It is about finding someone who understands weddings inside and out. Wedding receptions are full of transitions, time sensitive moments, mixed age groups and emotional highlights that all rely on the right song at the right time. Your DJ needs to understand the flow of the night just as well as your photographer and your venue coordinator.
Experience plays a major role. Weddings are very different from nightclub gigs or casual parties. A skilled wedding DJ knows how to read the room, manage the energy, coordinate with other vendors and adjust the music at the perfect moment.
Just as important is the planning support you are given along the way. Every couple is different and every celebration should feel personal. At Tubbzmix, we are never shy about meetings. If you want one meeting or one hundred meetings, that is completely fine. I always say that preparation is half the magic. By the time your wedding arrives, I want you to feel relaxed, confident and excited because we have already covered everything together.
There is also the matter of connection. This person will be guiding major moments of your wedding and you should feel comfortable with them from the very beginning. Always ask for a meeting or a video call before you book any vendor. It is the best way to see if the personalities match. If someone refuses to meet or wants to charge you simply to chat, that is usually a red flag.
Finally, a professional DJ brings high quality equipment and backup gear to every wedding. Clean sound, reliable microphones and a tidy setup all contribute to the atmosphere of the room. Your DJ should be as committed to reliability as they are to the music itself.

Building a Playlist That Actually Works
Creating the perfect wedding playlist is a balance between your favourite music and the songs that will get your guests moving. Start with the tracks that matter most to you. These become the heart of the night and help define the overall style.
A great playlist also blends decades and genres. Nostalgia is one of the strongest forces on a wedding dance floor and mixing eras helps guests of all ages feel included. Your favourite songs create the direction and personality of the night. From there, it is your DJ’s job to build the flow and choose the right moment for each track. A good DJ watches the crowd constantly, adjusts the energy and keeps the dance floor engaged without relying on a strict script.
A thoughtful do not play list is just as important as your must plays. If there are songs that make you cringe, ban them. This protects the mood you want without limiting your options. The key is to avoid banning entire decades or genres unless you genuinely dislike them. Large blocks of restrictions can unintentionally remove songs that your guests love. Focus on the songs that truly do not suit your style and then trust your DJ to work around them.

Avoiding a Dead Dance Floor
Every couple wants a packed dance floor and there are a few simple mistakes that can prevent that from happening. The first is opening the dance floor too early. Give the night time to warm up. Guests need to settle in, enjoy a drink, reconnect with people they have not seen for years and get comfortable.
The flow of speeches also matters. Long speeches can flatten the atmosphere and make it difficult to rebuild the energy later. Short, meaningful speeches keep the room engaged and allow the momentum of the night to continue naturally.
The opening moments of dancing are incredibly important. The first few songs set the tone for the rest of the reception and can shape the entire night. This is where your DJ’s crowd reading skills are vital. It is also why micromanaging the playlist often backfires. When your DJ is free to respond to the mood of the room, the energy stays high and the dance floor remains full.
Even the layout of the room plays a role. The bar should always be near the dance floor. If guests have to walk into another room for a drink, the dance floor will suffer every single time.
The Questions That Tell You Everything
Most couples know to ask about pricing, availability and equipment. However, the most revealing questions often go unasked. The first is simple: how do you read a crowd. Every DJ should have a clear, confident answer to this.
Ask how they manage guest requests, whether they bring backup gear, whether they personally will be the one DJing your wedding, what their pack down requirements are and how they help you plan the music in the months leading up to the big day. These answers will tell you exactly what kind of experience you can expect.
Your venue plays a role too. Before finalising your entertainment, ask where the DJ will be positioned, where the dance floor will be, whether there are noise limits and whether haze or smoke machines are allowed. Ask about power access, lighting and pack down times. These details can greatly influence the overall atmosphere of your reception.

How to Personalise Your Music Without Micromanaging
Couples often worry about giving too much direction or not enough. The truth is that your DJ does not need a giant spreadsheet of songs. What they need is an understanding of who you are and what you love. The best approach is to clearly communicate your must plays, your vibe and any specific songs that matter for key moments. Then ask your DJ how flexible the music can be during the night and how they handle spontaneous changes.
Your vision should guide every decision, but the flow of the night should remain flexible. This allows your DJ to adjust based on the energy in the room and create moments that feel natural and alive.
Guest Requests Without the Chaos
Guest requests can be one of the most entertaining parts of a wedding or one of the most unpredictable. A good DJ treats requests as suggestions, not instructions. I never promise a guest that I will play their song. Instead, I consider whether it fits the moment and whether it matches the couple’s vision. If it is on the do not play list, it simply does not happen.
Requests work best when they are filtered through the professional judgement of the DJ. Some are perfect for early in the night, some later and some well.. never. Trust keeps the dance floor balanced and prevents any guest from unintentionally derailing the mood.
Behind the Booth
Every wedding has a moment that sticks with me and one of my favourites involved a couple who were completely against having a first dance. They were nervous, did not like being the centre of attention and felt uncomfortable about the whole idea. I always follow the couple’s wishes, so we planned the reception without one.
On the day of the wedding the bride quietly asked if it was too late to change their minds. Absolutely not. Both of them loved metal music, so we searched for an acoustic version of their favourite song and used that instead. The moment was warm, intimate and personal. It suited them perfectly. After the wedding they thanked me for mentioning how beautiful the photos would be and also for helping them pivot at the last minute. It became one of their most cherished memories.
Moments like that remind me why this job is so special.

Why the Nutbush Never Dies Even Though I Still Cannot Do It
Here is the honest truth. After more than twenty years of DJing weddings, I still cannot do the Nutbush. I have seen it performed perfectly by every age group imaginable but if I tried it myself I would look like I was glitching.
The Nutbush survives because everyone knows it. It has the right balance of structure and chaos. It is nostalgic, light hearted and guaranteed to pull people of all ages onto the dance floor. Even though I will never master the steps, I will always play it whenever couples want it. It works every time.

Final Thoughts
A wedding DJ is not just someone who plays songs. They help guide the mood of your night, support key moments, manage the energy in the room and create memories that last a lifetime. The best weddings are not controlled to perfection. They are shaped with intention and allowed to unfold naturally.
