With music, comes dancing and what better way to kick off a month of tunes than sharing some of the epic dancefloors we’ve featured on Polka Dot Wedding? We’ve had it all, from flash mobs that completely blew the socks off the guests, to bush dances and serenades.

Our favourite part of writing up a wedding is putting on the music the couple used, and diving into their story. And your first dance? It’s a way you can truly make your wedding show off your personality. What will you choose?

The Flash Mob

“We did everything our own way. The ceremony was meaningful and solemn. We kept the laughs and partying to the reception. We surprised our guests! We kept most of the details to ourselves while we planned, knowing that the impact would be more special that way.”

The Serenade

“The first dance was not planned but was indeed a carefully executed surprise, tells the bride. “So we weren’t going to do the first dance, because again, tradition? But we did want a way to get everyone on the dance floor, so Paul and his groomsman (Trent) came up with an idea.

They have a “tradition” of singing Aerosmith’s “I don’t want to miss a thing” at karaoke, so they decided to keep this a secret from everyone and immediately after we cut the cake Paul and I got on the dancefloor and Trent sang the song to an instrumental version. He got the crowd involved, handing the microphone over to people which really got the party started. And from that point, Paul and I didn’t leave the dancefloor.”

The Mic Drop

“Our first dance was to The Teskey Brothers song called ‘Hold Me’ ” remembers Zoe. “We took lessons for 7 weeks in preparation and had the highest of hopes for our big closing performance on the night. We had a part where our whole wedding party was going to join us on the dance floor, however, they came in off cue, flooding the dance floor, causing Jarred to drop Zoe (she was okay). It was funny and all on video.”

The Prosecco Boogie

“We started our first dance with London Grammar’s cover of “Bittersweet Symphony” but with the help of DJ Jules we gave everyone a surprise and burst into a bit of a choreographed number to Mariah Carey’s banger “We Belong Together”.  We barely remembered the moves as we’d had a few Proseccos by this time but it was hilarious and had everyone singing the song for the week after!”

The Bollywood Inspired

“We chose The Cure’s “Why Can’t I Be You”, but we were also keen to continue the community involvement in the reception, so we planted the seed for a flash mob/group dance. Our hens day featured a Bollywood dance lesson and a core group of friends committed to a few rehearsals in the lead-up, so when the DJ switched to Punjabi MC’s hit Mundian To Bach Ke, they all stormed the dance floor and we pulled it off in style!”

The Private Moment

“We had an impromptu first dance on the cliffs as the sun was setting. Dana had something acoustic playing through the speaker and it all just happened. Not planned, (ask Trev, I hate slow dancing) but it was pretty surreal. I was super emotional yet laughing at the same time. That weird feeling of being so overjoyed but a can’t-believe-this-is-happening feeling.”

The Dance Lovers

“Shumon and I both love to tear up the dance floor. If we’re at an event with a dance floor you’ll be sure to find us there most of the time and so for our 1st dance we choreographed a short Bollywood dance which was super fun, light-hearted and memorable.”

The Memory Maker

“When Barney’s Mum passed away a few years ago, one of the songs that played at her funeral was Supertramp’s ‘Give a Little’. Barney and I chose our first dance to that same song and to play a slideshow of photographs. We asked all of our guests to send us a photo that makes them happy – their kids, their partners, their pets – anything! We played this as we danced. We had had the spotlight for the whole day till that point so it was important that we made sure that Barney’s mum was remembered on the day, without making it a sombre reminder at the same time.”

The Nod To Kylie…

“As a complete surprise to Matthew and the guests, I organised a show to this great live version of Kylie’s ‘I Should Be So lucky’. I sang (or more like lip-synched) to Matthew, complete with 12 backup dancers,  huge inflatable hearts and glitter canons.”

The Traditional Sweat

“After cocktails and canapés (which we joined in with our guests, there was no way we were gonna skip canapés!) we surprised many of our guests with a traditional Hora dance. The Hora is an important part of Jewish weddings. People around the world may be familiar with the bride and groom being lifted on a chair catching handkerchiefs but little do they know the level of chaos that goes on during Hora!. The absolutely mind-blowing Baker Boys Band pushed the atmosphere on the dance floor to a  crescendo after 30 minutes of non-stop dancing. The workout was more intense than Zumba and many of our guests had to change their shirts!”

The Performance

“A bunch of our family and friends prepared dances and performed them for us. This is quite normal for Indian weddings but was such a fun novelty for our guests that had never experienced this. We also were dragged up to dance in front of everyone in the middle of the speeches which was very embarrassing! I had to pull out my best Bhangra moves.”

The Bodyguard

“We did our first dance to an acoustic version of ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ by Rachel Brown. A couple of years earlier we went to see the stage performance of The Bodyguard and at the end, the band played this song, we both just jumped up and started dancing with each other in the aisle on the balcony, and it is one of our favourite memories together.”

The Taualuga

“Due to COVID, we weren’t able to have a first wedding dance, however, we included the Traditional Samoan dance called the Taualuga. This dance is where the bride changes into the Samoan Attire and performs a dance to end the night. Guests and family members join by placing monetary gifts on the bride during her performance.”

The Bush Dance

“Our live band was one of the first decisions we made about the wedding. Numguts Bush Band really helped to set the scene for the day and kept everyone entertained throughout the morning. We included our family in our first dance, and chose the ‘Gallopede’ to begin married life.”

The Shared Moment

”Any concerns that we had about a Tuesday wedding being a bit tame were certainly alleviated once the dance floor got going, and we definitely had the right man for the job with DJ Kieran O’Sullivan belting out tune after tune! It got pretty rowdy at times, and on the last song of the night, I may have ripped my chinos whilst sliding on my knees to bust out a big air guitar solo in the middle of the dance floor! Our first dance song was ‘Oogum Boogum Song’ by Brenton Wood. A fun, feel-good song – we wanted to share our first dance with our loved ones and got them to join us on the dance floor. We certainly didn’t want our dancing skills to be the centre of attention.”
