It’s time for another instalment of Behind the Shot, where we ask a photographer to share one of their favourite candid shots. These aren’t the shots you’ll see saved and pinned, but they’re our favourites for another reason, they tell the real story of the day- the moments that really show who was getting married, beneath the curated layers. Exactly why we love them!

This time, Melbourne wedding photographer Brett Scapin shares one of his favourites, with a shot from Ruby & Harry’s wedding at their own home.

In Brett’s words:

“It’s not unusual to start my wedding workday at a couple’s home, but some of my absolute favourites never leave. Ruby and Harry were so relaxed and down-to-earth, and very happy to take five minutes for a quick shoot in their lounge room after their ceremony.

I love how absolutely spectacular these two look in an everyday domestic setting. And I love the unique little clues around the room that tell their story: remnants of pre-wedding snacks and Limoncello, the bouquet hiding a pack of Tooshie baby wipes, Caz’s unused box of rose petals, custom family stubby holders, and Ruby and Harry’s son’s trike.

It all makes for real warmth and context that you can’t stage, and it’s a photographer’s dream.”

About the Author: Brett Scapin is a Melbourne-based wedding photographer with a genuine love of the mayhem, energy and emotion a wedding day brings. Shooting weddings since 2017, he works in a candid, documentary style inspired by photojournalism and street photography, choosing to stand back and let the day unfold rather than staging posed moments. It’s an approach that puts couples at ease and consistently finds the pictures that matter most, the ones that are already there if you know how to watch for them.
