The Adelaide Hills is a landscape of undulating terrain that unsurprisingly entices many couples to wed in the region. With a tiny population of under 40,000, the local wedding vendors regularly work together like a well oiled machine. And let’s just say we’re a bit proud of our region!

The region inspires the the style of weddings here. The colours of the seasonal landscape are reflected in the styling and florals and the event an opportunity to celebrate the local artisan wineries, orchards and cheesemakers that craft experiences for the tastebuds.

Our styled shoot (‘A Hills Romance’) is full of country charm and modern accents. The ever popular rustic wedding theme today is all about blending the rich colours and textures of the natural landscape to create a complimentary feel.

The team behind this shoot, local and afar, have put together some tips to help you achieve that perfectly rustic and romantic style on your wedding day.

Paula Hobson – Wildflowers & Moss (Stylist/Florist)

When working within natural surroundings, it’s always important to enhance rather than try and overshadow. Choosing a colour palette that mimics the colours and tones in the surrounding area will amplify the existing beauty and ensure that your wedding looks like it was meant to belong within the space. Another way to ensure that your styling works perfectly within its surroundings is to incorporate blooms and foliage that are growing at the venue. In the case of this styled shoot, we foraged for grasses and native ferns that were growing at the site and used those in the floral arrangements. This meant that the underlying tones of the floral arrangements were the perfect compliment to their surroundings.

Bridget Quain – BQ Photography (Photographer)

Photography is a medium to capture moments in time. One of my loves in the Adelaide Hills is the old architecture. I jump for joy when clients choose a rustic location or venue for their wedding. However, this can easily be ruined by incompatible or over styling. A good stylist will work with the backdrop to create a harmonious feel. Covering up the years of decay, or organic setting, robs your images of authenticity. The old saying KISS (Keep-It-Simple-Stupid) goes a long way.

Natasha Keneally  (Hair and Makeup Artist)

All too often I have clients struggling to decide on what to do with their hair and makeup for their special day. I say just “do you” . Keep it simple and keep it real! Be yourself and then you will be comfortable and enjoy your day.

Jordan Lewis – Thistle and Whey (Cake)

I don’t think you necessarily need to have a wedding cake. If you’re not into it, don’t bother! But if you do choose to have a cake for your big day, seek out a baker who will make your cake beautiful inside and out.

For me, this means not only does it look amazing and taste like the best cake you’ve ever eaten, but that the baker has used the best local and seasonal ingredients and flowers for your cake.  Then you are supporting a whole lot of wonderful small businesses all at once!

Ashleigh Jane Bridal (Designer)

Whether it’s through bridal couture, or the avenue of made-to-order, I often meet brides who feel stuck on where to even begin when searching for The Dress.  Starting the whole process may feel daunting at first, but it doesn’t have to be!

Think about what occasion dress styles you have felt amazing wearing in the past. What about the cut or design fitted and flattered you the most? Variety is also your friend here – the more styles you try, the faster you’ll be able to narrow down your options.  And, most importantly, keep your circle small. Take only a couple of supportive loved ones along with you whose opinions and ideas you really trust.

Ms Floral: What a stunning part of Australia! Thank you so much for sharing it with us, as well as your excellent advice on styling a rustic and romantic wedding.
