When discussing the buttonholes with the Groom (yes, you would be surprised that some Grooms take their buttonhole very seriously) I always ask if they would prefer something simple or something a bit more special. It’s also important to note the suit colour and whether the Groom will be wearing a tie, bowtie and/or a pocket square, as these elements help in the decision making process.
Secondly, matching the buttonhole flowers to the rest of the wedding theme, whether its the bridal bouquet or the venue flowers. If the wedding is at a winery, then more often than not, it will be surrounded by native Gums and Olive groves, so I always like to include those into the wedding florals. Other times a particular flower or greenery might be a nice way to acknowledge the grooms heritage, such as if the Groom has Scottish heritage then a thistle type flower may be used for the buttonhole.

Romantic
Florals you might include: The Ranunculus
Why you love them: The Ranunculus is one of my favourite flowers because it’s soft and delicate and full of petals. It’s seasonal and only available in spring, and then it’s gone for another year. So, it’s one of those flowers you have to love for a short time of the year like the Peonies. They are available in a range of colours ranging from white & creams, to pinks, burgundy and yellow and orange and sometimes we’re lucky enough to be able to get our hands on a peachy colour.
What suit/styling/look they go well with: This buttonhole would suit a romantic or whimsical style with soft pastels and works well on light grey/blue and navy suits

Classic
Florals you might include: White roses with silver suede and gum leaves
Why you love them: Rose buttonholes are always classy and so versatile. By changing the leaves or additional foliage/flowers with the Rose, you can change the style.
What suit/styling/look they go well with: This type of buttonhole suits a classic or modern style wedding and works well with all suit types and colours.

Modern/Rustic
Florals you might include: Roses, hypericum berries and silver suede leaves and tied with twine
Why you love them: Adding other elements such as berries and smaller Rose buds to the buttonhole is for the Groom who likes to stand out from the crowd.
What suit/styling/look they go well with: Having the twine wrap around the buttonhole suits a rustic wedding.
