Katherine and Matt

When Matt and I planned our engagement photos all we wanted was to have some fun and play with our dog Basil. Centennial Park in Sydney at sunset provided a wonderfully romantic backdrop. These moments, captured by Scott Surplice, were a really joyful way to commemorate our engagement.

We were set up by a mutual friend and made an instant connection. I fell in love with Matthew’s easy going nature and sense of humour – he tells the best of the worst ‘lame dad jokes’. After dating for a couple of years Matt popped the question!

I love our engagement story. My mum actually approached Matt last October to offer him my late Nanna’s engagement ring (how is that for a blessing!). However, he had to admit to her that he had already bought one and was waiting until Christmas day to propose. Feeling his plan had been foiled, Matt decided to bring Christmas early. On a random Thursday afternoon I arrived home and Matt had set up a mini Christmas tree and presented me with a stocking filled with gifts. Inside was a lovely new dress, a beautiful antique brooch (seen in these photos), a lovely blue teacup Christmas ornament and his favourite daggy tracky dacks. By this stage I was very confused and Matt explained to me that it was ‘something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue’. At the bottom of the stocking was a ring box, with a beautiful diamond ring inside.

Including Basil in our engagement photos was a really wonderful idea. Before the photo shoot we decided let Basil off leash for a run to diffuse some of his energy. It wasn’t long before he found a ‘special treat’ in the park (a poor dead possum), which he proceeded to roll in and try to eat. After the initial shock and chasing him around the park, we could not stop laughing. In fact it was a great way to diffuse any pre-photo jitters we had! You can’t stay mad at that face for long.

Scott is an excellent photographer who made us feel right at home in front of the camera. He has little tricks that made us giggle at each other and feel really loved. I think our love for each other really shines through in these photos. We can’t wait for him to shoot our wedding next year.
