There’s a moment at a lot of weddings that I love. It’s after the ceremony, before the dance floor properly kicks off, when everyone’s got a drink in hand, and you can feel the day shifting into the fun part. The light usually does something beautiful at that time too. Violet, pink, that soft sunset glow.

We wanted a cocktail that suits that exact window. Fresh, fizzy, not too sweet, and pretty enough to hold its own in photos. This is it.

Meet the Violet Sunset Gin Fizz.

It’s bright with lemon, softened with grenadine, and finished with soda, so it stays light. The mint is the best part. It makes it feel crisp and properly refreshing, not syrupy. And that colour at the bottom of the glass is the whole point. It looks like sunset without you having to do anything clever.

The finishing touch? Those dried purple citrus slices from our friends at Mixso which are basically made for this drink. They sit on top like a little jewel and make the whole thing feel a bit special, even if you’re just mixing one at home.

If you’re making a batch for a group, this one’s easy too. You can prep the gin and lemon ahead of time, then add ice, grenadine and soda right before serving so it stays bubbly.

Ingredients

  • 45 ml gin
  • 20 ml fresh lemon juice
  • 15 ml grenadine
  • Soda water, to top
  • A few fresh mint leaves
  • Ice
  • Dried purple citrus slice (we used Mixso)
  • Mint sprig (optional)

Method

  1. Fill a lowball or highball glass with ice.
  2. Add the gin and lemon juice.
  3. Pour in the grenadine.
  4. Top with soda water and give it a gentle stir.
  5. Lightly clap the mint between your hands to release the aroma, then add it to the glass.
  6. Garnish with a dried purple citrus slice and, if you like, a mint sprig.
