There’s something undeniably joyful about a wedding that throws tradition out the window in favour of fun and colour – and that’s exactly what Isabel and Jack did. Their colourful DIY wedding was three things: relaxed, playful, and deeply connected to the people (and pups!) they love most. With confetti flying, this celebration was less about ticking boxes and more about soaking up the good vibes.
Summer hiking camp was where Isabel and Jack’s worlds collided at the young ages of 15 and 17. They became instant friends – and only six months later, their relationship shifted into the beginnings of what it is today!
When packing for a Gold Coast trip with friends, the last thing Isabel expected Jack to pack was a ring. And yet, as they were enjoying a beach walk by themselves on the last day, that was the exact item he revealed to her, down on one knee.
Ruby from Down The Road Weddings was the videographer for this colourful DIY wedding, working alongside Peter from Wild Heart Photography. “She and Peter worked together all day, and she was so much fun. She had a speaker playing our favourite music at all times so we could dance and have fun, and the video she created of our wedding was amazing!!”
Jack opted for a black relaxed-fit suit from Uniqlo, which he paired with 70s Converse – his fav shoe! His wedding party included: Percy, Dan, Declan and Liam. All of them wore whatever black suit they wanted, along with a pair of Converse each that Isabel and Jack bought for everyone.
Isabel leaned more towards a relaxed vibe for her outfit. Spotting this gorgeous two-piece skirt and top set from Dissh’s bridal collection and instantly falling in love. “It was relaxed and suited me to a tee. I decided to wear my Dr Martens with both of my dresses, my go-to shoe for every occasion!” she explained, before adding, “It was unplanned, but my Mum gave me one of her rings to wear for “something blue”, which was super cute!”
Within her wedding party, Isabel had Audrey, Emerald, Ella and Georgia. The girls wore stunning pastel pink, yellow, blue and lilac dresses. “I wanted them each to wear a different colour, which I chose, but the rest was all up to them! I also arranged bouquets to match their dress colours.”
As this was a DIY wedding, Isabel went down to Geelong Flower Farm the day before and bought all of the colourful florals you’ll see throughout these shots. “I got flowers to match each bridesmaid dress and then mixed them together to make my own bouquet. We then placed the extras in vases around the venue. My main flowers of choice were dahlias, hydrangeas and snapdragons!”
Harvester Moon was their central hub for the day – it was the perfect backdrop for their colourful wedding with its rustic farmhouse vibe and breathtaking gardens. “The gardens are amazing meaning we didn’t need to get many flowers and the rustic furniture completely fit our vibe for the day.”
To kick off the ceremony, sister Audrey and brother Percy walked Isabel and Jack’s two dogs, Teddy and Sully, down the aisle! “We had to include Teddy and Sully. They stayed for some photos before going home.”
Isabel herself walked down the aisle with her mum on one arm and her dad on the other. They strolled towards Jack as “Sea Of Love” by Cat Power played, a song both Jack and Isabel love.
Since both Jack and Isabel wanted to keep the ceremony short and sweet, they enlisted the help of their celebrant – Hitched by Haylz! “We had Haylz write a personalised ceremony for us, which she kept a secret so we got to hear it for the first time on the day and have genuine reactions. We encouraged her to have fun with it, and she definitely made people laugh! We did a unity shot as suggested by Haylz, and we kept our witnesses a secret to be revealed during the ceremony! We chose to not have any readings,” Isabel shared.
“Haylz, our celebrant, was incredible. We also had her stay at our MC, which she’d never done before, but she absolutely smashed it. Our guests loved her, and it honestly felt like having another friend at the wedding!”
Speaking of secret witnesses – when they announced who their witnesses were going to be, it was Isabel’s favourite moment of the day! “I had become best friends with Kiera after we became engaged, and I chose my bridesmaids, so I really wanted to include her. When it was announced, she was crying, and it was so wholesome!”
Jack’s favourite moment? Walking back up the aisle with his wife in hand. “I remember walking down the aisle together with everyone throwing confetti and just feeling so happy and excited,” he shared.
As we mentioned earlier, Peter from Wild Heart Photography captured this colourful DIY day alongside Isabel and Jack – and was the perfect choice for this laidback couple. “He was perfect for us; he made us feel super at ease and bounced off our videographer perfectly. I was really nervous about how awkward taking photos might be, but he made everything feel relaxed and natural, and the photos turned out amazing!”
The top five things that made Isabel and Jack’s colourful DIY wedding so special included:
“1. Having our dogs there
2. Making our ceremony super fun and personalised for us
3. Having lots of 1:1 time together to let everything sink in
4. Writing our own vows for each other
5. Not taking anything too seriously.”
Turning towards the reception space, we need to point out three main elements! The first is this incredible cake Isabel made with her mum. Two layers of chocolate cake layered with cream cheese icing and decorated with leftover flowers – can we hear some commotion for the final product?? “We didn’t want to put the flowers on too early, so I had my Aunty and friend run into the kitchen to do it when they arrived at the wedding. Their only brief was to use all of the flowers I had left for them.”
The second item we want to highlight is this stunning vintage suitcase wishing well Isabel made, complete with fake boarding passes. And finally one of Isabel’s best friends handmade all of these beautiful soaps as their wedding favours!
The piece of advice Isabel and Jack want to leave for future married couples is this: “Make your wedding exactly what you want it to be! Don’t feel pressured to do anything a certain way because there really isn’t a right or a wrong. The only right thing is what suits you best! Don’t sweat the small stuff and have fun!”
This duo chose “Mamma Mia” by ABBA for their first dance. This was where Isabel debuted her second dress for the day – a stunning mini Leo Lin number covered in florals! “It was far from a choreographed dance, and we had every intention of having everyone join us for the first dance; however, of course, they forced us to dance by ourselves longer than I anticipated! There are photos of me yelling at everyone to dance with us,” she explained.
The favourite photo of the day? If not one with Teddy and Sully, Isabel would have to say the ones of her and Jack running through the field together.
Not only was it a special day for Isabel and Jack, but it was also Isabel’s brother Percy’s 12th birthday! They had a cake and sang Happy Birthday to honour him with their loved ones.
Their favourite part of the night was towards the end when everyone was dancing together and really enjoying the moment. The good vibes went on all night, thanks to their DJ, Frankie Sax! “I was on Jack’s shoulders, and we were all having so much fun! When the wedding ended, everyone was devastated!”
Congratulations, Isabel and Jack! Thanks to Wild Heart Photography for capturing and sharing these beautiful moments with us.
