Based in QLD but travelling all over Australia – and yes to Tasmania too, Josh Withers Wedding Celebrant is a dynamic force in the wedding industry. With international weddings under his belt too, Josh has inspired with his thoughtful approach to weddings, as well as his boundless creativity and energy.
As Josh tells in his Podcast “I feel like the way you get married is how you be married. That you should have this intentional, good marriage celebration….” Josh is all about getting to know you so that he is able to create a ceremony that reflects who you are and how you want your future marriage to start and to be reflected through your ceremony. Sincerity, energy, and most of all a fun and relaxed atmosphere – starting your married life with a ceremony that is just ‘you’!
To find out what makes Josh tick we asked him five questions:
Weddings are the best to work on because….
Weddings are the best to work on because for that one day all of us, you, your friends and family, have permission to be encouraging, lovely, prideful, positive,
gushy, emotional, honest, and true. We’re legally allowed to be these things on every other day but most of us get awkward about it. I relish those authentic and vulnerable moments and that’s why I love being a celebrant.
What is something people would be surprised to know about your job or something that challenges you about your job?
Something people would be surprised to know about your job would be that across the week, most weeks, the number one occupier of time for a celebrant is waiting. Waiting in traffic, waiting for a call, waiting for the printer, waiting for access to a wedding venue, waiting for the florist to finish the installation, waiting for the stylist to put the chairs out, waiting for the loading zone so you can get your gear out before parking, waiting for guests, waiting for the couple so you can start the ceremony, twenty minutes delivering the ceremony, then waiting for the guests to move out of the ceremony so you can pack your PA system away, waiting for the couple to have a spare moment so you can pop in and give them a hug, waiting for the people who parked you in to be found and move their car, waiting in the McDonalds drive-thru, waiting in the car in the driveway for just a few seconds before you walk in the door and start being a dad again.
What is it about the creative process that you most enjoy?
The thing with creativity that I enjoy most is the free-range opportunity given to me to just try. There are very few laws and regulations around creativity. I’m mostly allowed to just try anything at least once, even if it’s potentially terrible, and sometimes it is, but every now and then it’s amazing.
What are you hilariously bad at?
I am hilariously bad at reading from a script. I learned this in the on-stage production I was a part of. I simply don’t possess the skills to read words from a page out loud confidently and well. That’s why you’ll find me in any marriage ceremony this week just speaking from my heart, because it’s what I’m best at.
When you were small what did you dream of being and where have those dreams taken you?
When I was a little boy all I wanted was a computer. I used to design them – on paper – in class when I was supposed to be learning and studying. So today I’m the biggest nerd you’ll find. I’m watching Apple keynotes, reading computer magazines, listening to tech podcasts, buying too many gadgets, and continually wanting the next best techie thing.
