Offering exquisite beaches and unusual landscapes, great party potential and an intriguing fusion of cultures, if Malta isn’t already on your honeymoon list, perhaps it should be.

A short flight from London, this Mediterranean island nation is easily accessible and rich in history. Arabic, Roman, Norman, French and British influences are evident in everything from the food, to the architecture, to the red telephone boxes dotted all over the island, making it a fascinating locale for history-loving honeymooners.

Super popular with British and European travellers, Malta can get pretty busy during the peak summer period, so it’s best to book ahead for activities and get up early to beat the crowds. A Maltese honeymoon could be the perfect pick for sun-loving couples after a relaxed beach break with a hefty side of history. So, if that sounds like you, these are five Maltese must-sees to put at the top of your list:

For essential sightseeing: Valletta

Head to the island’s capital Valletta for a dose of city-life and enjoy strolling along its bustling promenades and quiet side streets. This UNESCO site is home to several museums and churches including the St John’s co-Cathedral which features masterpieces by legendary artist Caravaggio. For a serene rest stop, be sure to visit the Upper and Lower Barrakka gardens, which both offer incredible views of the Grand Harbour.

For a day trip: Gozo

A short ferry ride from the Maltese mainland lies Gozo, a rugged, sun-drenched isle that makes an ideal day-trip destination. For an adventurous island overview, book a guided quad bike tour. Gozo Pride Tours runs full-day excursions which will have you zipping all over the island while discovering more about the island’s natural and cultural history. You’ll travel through laid-back villages, see ancient churches, pass by saltpans and stop for swims along the way, including at a protected inlet near the island’s blue grotto.

For a dose of history: Mdina

Step into an ancient walled city steeped in mythic beauty and be transported thousands of years back in time. Also known as the Silent City, this medieval-meets-baroque municipality is an appealing mix of narrow winding alleys and open squares. Here, you’ll find churches, museums and catacombs in addition to quaint restaurants and artisan stores. Eagled-eye Game of Thrones fans may also recognise it as a filming location for a number of scenes in the series.

Wander at leisure and enjoy getting a little lost in the maze-like streets before stopping for a drink at Coogi’s restaurant; an old Arabic townhouse with a delightful rooftop terrace boasting far-reaching views.

For a picturesque lunch spot: Marsaxlokk

This relaxed fishing village is a major tourist drawcard thanks to its central harbour heaving with traditional Maltese fishing boats. Joyfully painted in bright hues, the wooden boats (called luzzus) are typically emblazoned with a pair of mythical eyes on the bow, to ensure the fishermen’s protection while at sea.

Malta’s second largest natural harbour, Marsaxlokk Bay is a great place to stop for lunch. Dine alfresco on fresh seafood at a harbour restaurant, or pick up a few pastizzi and enjoy an on-the-go lunch while strolling along the waterfront.

For a swim: St Peter’s Pool

A few minutes drive around the peninsula from Marsaxlokk, you’ll find St Peter’s Pool, a secluded cove adored by locals and visitors alike. Set up your towels on the rocky rim before carefully clambering down to the water, watch thrill-seeking swimmers cannonball off the edge and enjoy a post-dip drink at the nearby beach bar.
