Jessie & Johnnie
If there ever was a wedding that the phrase “having a moment” should apply to, it might just be to the wedding of Jessie & Johnnie. The pair, who flew all the way from Los Angeles to marry, somehow, despite Mother Nature pouring down with rain, managed the most sparkly Sydney wedding.
The happy couple met one New Years Eve, the bride remembering “Johnnie and I met at the 2012/2013 New Year’s Eve party of two mutual friends of ours. We got to chatting about Brazil and Brazilian music, specifically Sergio Mendes. We instantly hit it off chatting about samba and drinking glass after glass (after glass) of champagne and ended up being each other’s midnight kiss. One year later, we went on our first date to a Sergio Mendes concert. And then, we went backstage to hang with the band after the show because Johnnie is a total boss.”
Jessie chose a sparkling BHLDN gown in a stunning champagne hue, complete with sequins.
The couple met before the ceremony for a first look.
Married By Lisa officiated proceedings, Jessie remarking “The ceremony was so special because we both felt like we were in an empty room just saying these wonderful things to each other. It was like in movies when the people and surroundings just melt away and it’s just you and your partner and nothing else. And then we kissed. It was magical.”
“My mother made this gorgeous iridescent blue table runner. It fit the room perfectly and added a beautiful contrast to those deep blooms on the table.” tells the bride.
Blooms by Bethan created the lush floral styling, Jessie noting “In the US it is considered lucky to get married in June. Since most June brides enjoy the abundance of summer blooms, I wanted to create that effect but with the Australian winter season in mind. Instead of bright summer colours, we embraced deep jewel tones—burgundy and teal, with pops of gold. Featuring the Sydney Skyline against that beautiful grey winter sky was also key, so floor-to-ceiling windows and a view of the Opera House were a must-have.”
Jessie remarks “Everyone we hired was so professional, nice, and did excellent work!”
Jessie notes “For us, marriage is about a partnership. We are equal investors in our future, emotionally and financially. We celebrate each other’s successes together and lament our failures together because what’s his is mine and what’s mine is his. We save together, spend together, and make those decisions together so that win or lose, we go through it together. We are equally committed to working through the arguments, big or small. We are also (mostly) equally committed to doing the dishes and taking out the trash because 10, 20, and 30 years from now we’ll still be doing that stuff too.
We are planning for the next 50+ years. What we’re doing, the conversations we’re having, the decisions we’re making, the places we’re going—all of those things are going to play a role in our future, so we’re doing them all together. Otherwise, what’s the point, right? Our goal is to be partners in every way because we are truly stronger together.”
