Dee & Mark

It was music that brought Dee and Mark together, the pair fell in love, listening to Mark’s iPod during their weekend shifts at a local winery and it was at a winery that they decided to seal their fate together.

The couple chose the beautiful Western Australian town of Denmark for their day. With photographer  Tanya Voltchanskaya capturing every moment, the couple chose a beautiful outdoor ceremony, and wanted the focus to be on good wine and food, and a restaurant for their reception. They topped it off with beautiful blooms, handmade projects and a gorgeous first look!

Dee, took advantage of the leap year and proposed on a romantic overseas holiday. “We had planned a holiday to Europe and it just so happened the 29th of Feb would land when we were in Italy. I started thinking maybe I should take the opportunity to propose while we were having this adventure travelling and time to enjoy being together. I mentally prepared a speech and left the rest to fate what would happen that day, hoping a moment to present itself. It was a day full of false starts and unlucky timing but we made it to Perugia, everywhere was closed for siesta, we had the medieval town to ourselves. After exploring tunnels under the city we popped out at a beautiful lookout and a moody sky for just the two of us. Once I started talking Mark realised what was happening and immediately said yes. He loved that I asked and that we could get engaged on holiday without it being too cliche.”

The bride chose a beautifully beaded gown by Martina Liana, noting “Working in the bridal industry I am surrounded by dresses every day. I work with some amazing women and it was a beautiful experience to have them involved in the process. I never expected I would choose a beaded gown but I loved the detailing and it feels very special to wear.”

Dee and Mark met before the ceremony for photographs and a first look, Dee explaining “We aren’t religious or traditional and wanted to keep away from anything it felt like we were expected to do because it was a wedding. We just wanted to have the ceremony and a party and keep it a relaxed and fun day with our closest friends and family.”

The couple made the most of Denmark and its surroundings over their wedding weekend, noting “We loved seeing everyone’s pics on Instagram of their road trips and arriving in Denmark, going to the beach and wineries before the wedding. There was such a great vibe with everyone on holiday, relaxed and enjoying being in such a beautiful place. Many of our friends had never been to Denmark. It was amazing to have the whole weekend to share with everyone. It meant we got to spend quality time with everyone and it didn’t feel like the whole thing was over too quickly.”

The couple wanted amazing food and wine, so they found Pepper and Salt to be just the right choice for their ceremony and reception, explaining “We researched a few venues in Perth but couldn’t find anywhere special to us or that we hadn’t already been to for a wedding. We started looking in Denmark because we love the area and thought I would be fun to make a weekend out of it with our friends and families. It will now always be a special place to go and visit in the future. Somewhere we don’t drive past every day. Our biggest must-haves was good wine and good food and Forest Hill/Pepper and Salt was the perfect choice, it’s a beautiful spot where could have both the ceremony and reception and have the place to ourselves.”

Dee walked down the aisle to “Wedding Song” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

The couple married outside in a romantic ceremony, telling “We didn’t want anything too traditional so we didn’t have any readings or rituals. As we weren’t having speeches we worked our proposal story into the ceremony and our friends Ingrid and Helen sang, it was really personal and felt right for us. We loved having our ceremony outdoors looking out over the hills behind our friends and family. We kept our decorations pretty simple as the spot was so stunning. Our florist created three beautiful wreaths to hang from the tree we were married under and it was perfect.”

Guests were gifted personalised candles made by the newlyweds. Dee remembering “We were really glad we made our own invitations, candle sleeves with guests names and made our own signs. We had fun working together on these projects and it enabled us to tie together our concept for the day in a personal way. I also put together the vase arrangements for our reception flowers the day before, it was really stressful at the time but sourcing our own decorations, working really closely with our vendors and doing a few DIY things ourselves meant it turned out exactly the way we wanted and felt like us.”

“We had so many amazing vendors but standouts would have to be the Silas and the team at Pepper & Salt, Maggie Anderson our Celebrant, Bloomin’ Flowers our florist, our jeweller Julia DeVille who crafted our amazing rings and our photographer Tanya Volt who documented our day. I can’t thank them enough for being so generous with their time and working so closely with us to personalise our day.”

And thank you to the talented Tanya Voltchanskaya for sharing today’s beautiful images!
