Gillian and Simon
I’m not sure I could meet a cooler couple than Gillian and Simon, the bride not only rocked her floral print wedding gown and gold love earrings but the groom? Patterned shirt and dapper suit and the gold, oh so much glittery gold. Take that combination, put it together with a modern art museum and you’ll have a wedding to remember! Luckily Luke Lornie Photography was there to capture every waking moment!
Gillian kicked off her wedding day look with gold and purple heels from Kate Spade. Tying into the gold theme, the bridesmaids wore gold dresses from ModCloth.
Gillian was somewhat alone during her hair and makeup, due to a wayward guest. She explains, “The dog ran away as the girls were getting ready. The bridesmaids ran around trying to find it while I took deep breaths and got my make up done. One of the bridesmaids, fully made up and dressed, asked someone mowing their lawn if they had seen a lost dog run past. They said yes and she was so relieved until he handed her the dog he had found and it was the wrong one. We got Bobbie back safe and sound though and she came to the wedding.”
The groom wore a blue suit from Jack London.
Gillian chose a purple and blue floral printed gown by Wendy Makin from Brides On Collins.
Gillian and Simon met for a first look before the ceremony.
Of their photographer, Gillian and Simon tell, “We used Luke’s photobooth company for our engagement bash and turns out he was a wedding photographer so we checked out his stuff. According to his online bio he knew how to operate a camera so we hired him. Luke wasn’t intrusive at all – just fitted in nicely with the day and we were super happy with the results. Luke is a dag and we really got along with him, cracking jokes and having fun. We decided he would make a good friend so we’ve kept him.”
Wunderplant created the floral arrangements for the day, Gillian remarking, “The florist, Wunderplant, was given a brief, but went so far above and beyond I was grinning all night at the gorgeous and abundant flowers we ended up with.”
Gillian and Simon chose Heide Museum of Modern Art for their ceremony and reception, explaining, “I bought Simon a Heide membership as an engagement present cause he gave me a ring and I felt he needed some form of reciprocation. We go there a lot, love the food and wine at Cafe Vue, love the art and different gallery spaces, the gardens are lovely and it’s got a great history. When we found out they had my favourite sparkling and Simon’s favourite beer on their beverage list, we figured it was meant to be.”
Gillian and Simon hired wedding planner and stylist The Creative Type to pull everything together, remembering, “Caroline from the Creative Type took away a lot of the stress by setting up and packing everything we had made down and basically taking care of business.”
Gillian walked down the aisle to Make it Wit Chu – Queens of the Stone Age.
Maree Livy performed the ceremony.
“At the reception we snuck away for ten minutes with a beer and a doughnut and had some alone time to catch up on the day which was fun.”
Guests celebrated at king tables inside Cafe Vue at Heide.
The reception had a decidedly modern whimsy feel – colour, beautiful typography and gold touches! The newlyweds noting, “Simon is a graphic designer of epic proportions and did the invites, thank you cards, menus and other stationery.”
The food was a highlight for the couple who remember ,”We loved our Krispy Kreme doughnut cake. AND the beef brisket and pickle rolls that were brought out near the end of the party to soak up some of the party… delicious.”
Tables were decorated with beautiful blooms and gold and white potted succulents, Gillian remembering, “Simon’s parents helped us with the favours – they propagated the succulents from their garden and my bridesmaids helped us paint the concrete pots we made. I spent time with a glue gun, a stencil and a paint brush doing cake toppers, place card flags, napkins and some cool wooden initials of S & G with washi tape and spray paint.
This was easy to fit in since I was already watching a lot of trashy wedding shows on Foxtel and may as well be productive at the same time, but there was a small panic two weeks before where the girls came over for a crafternoon and smashed the rest out with me.”
Guests were invited to add to the decor. “As we were at an art gallery, we figured art should be a part of the day so we had plain linen table cloths and put colourful fabric markers along the tables. Guests used it as a grown up version of the crayons and butchers paper in family restaurant, and it doubled as a guest book. We have some lovely drawings, messages, jokes and doodles, and one rude drawing (who can resist?).”
The first dance was a group effort, the newlyweds telling, “The iPod and speaker hook up failed to work at first, but we have a friend who is a qualified sound engineer and he eventually found the elusive ‘Play’ button so we and all our guests could shake it to Harry Belafonte – Jump in the Line.”
Congratulations on your marriage Gillian and Simon! Thank you for sharing your day with us! Thank you to Luke Lornie Photography for sharing today’s wedding with us!
Love her dress and the bridesmaid dresses!
