Sophie and Sam’s Modern St Kilda Wedding

When I first saw this modern St Kilda wedding pop up on Instagram last year through Louisa Bailey I think I lost my breath. A bride in a tangerine gown? As someone who is so utterly traditional in a sense, I am always beyond excited when brides express their different personalities and wear a beautiful, coloured gown.

Sophie and Sam chose a modern feel for their wedding day – from the garden ceremony, the tangerine gown to a St Kilda Stokehouse reception and an outfit change into silver sequins. They did it their way and it was awesome. On how they met, Sophie tells, “We met in rehab (a great joke but also true!) We are both (working) in health and Sam fell head over heels for Soph over a rehab meeting at St Vincents Hospital.”

Sophie and Sam met before the ceremony for photographs. Of their photographer Louisa, Sophie says, “Louisa was the epitome of professionalism, artistic flair, with down to earth approach, warmth and the ability to make you feel at ease the moment you meet her. She became more a part of the wedding rather than an external aspect.”

Sophie’s tangerine wedding gown was purchased at Carla Zampatti.

Sophie and Sam held their ceremony at a private home, Sophie walking down the aisle to Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” performed by Ruby Strings.

Melanie Lunny performed the ceremony, the newlyweds noting, “Our celebrant Mel Lunny really made our ceremony feel earthy and warm and represented our story, and the precious people in our lives.”

Sophie remembers, “Sam’s mother organised the garden, champagne & catering at her house for the reception which was full of bright orange, pink and red hues (tulips & roses) and managed to have our cake (a croquembouche from The French Lettuce) draped with bright rose petals also.”

“Our wedding was so special because it reflected us as a couple, there was plenty of humour in our ceremony/vows and a change of outfits for the evening to reflect our sense of fun together and that we were in full celebration mode- we matched our outfits and had great fun with it!”

The reception was held at Stokehouse, the couple telling, “Stokehouse was classy, efficient and very friendly. Our favourite part though were the flowers which were created by Nic at Camberwell Florist, who added all personal touches and mixed vintage with bright spring collections and made the journey such a memorable adventure! Thanks Nic- we love you!”

The couple both changed outfits for the reception, Sam to a grey suit and Sophie to a silver sequin Collette Dinnigan frock.

Sophie and Sam tell, “The part of the day for both of us were the speeches, there were poems and funny tales and heartfelt, emotional moments.”

Of their first dance, Sophie tells “We did a rumba dance to our favourite song by Ron Sexsmith, and played/sung live by Sam’s brother Tom on guitar- just perfect.”
