We’re kicking off this Monday with an expert interview from a photographer I love- Karen Buckle is based in Queensland and takes the most beautiful light and bright images. There is a clean, dreaminess to her photography and she captures candids so elegantly! It’s a pleasure to have Karen join us today to share some of the thoughts behind her work.

Please tell me about yourself and your background?

In 2000 I enrolled myself in a part time course at Photography Studies College in Melbourne. Right from the start it was images of people that interested me. It wasn’t till 2006 that I decided to start my business. Initially I did portraits but a friend of a friend asked me to photograph her wedding and on the wedding day the sky was crazy beautiful with a big rainbow and as nervous as I was – I loved every minute! That’s when I fell in love with weddings.

What inspired you to get into the photography industry?

I think I was always a visual person and when I got to PSC I felt so excited to learn film and darkroom and just loved photography right from the start. I felt like I had stumbled across something that was just right for me.

What sets you apart from other photographers?

I really don’t know. I’m just keeping things really simple. Doing what I love.

What was your first camera?

I borrowed my Pop’s Canon AE-1, with a 50mm 1.4 lens (I still haven’t returned it! )

Where is the strangest place you have taken a picture?

Just recently I took a bridal party into a Add Vintage, a vintage furniture shop in Wooloongabba – that was great for something different.

What is your favourite part of your job?

I love wedding days! I love the nerves, excitement, happiness, tears – you can’t beat the atmosphere at a wedding!

Do you have any advice for aspiring photographers?

Just make it happen. If you aren’t confident, volunteer for an established professional. Keep listening and learning. Work really hard and be nice.  Keep your word.

Where is your favourite setting to shoot wedding photos?

I LOVE the beach, especially when there’s not too many people around, it makes a gorgeous backdrop, the breeze creates movement and the light can be really stunning.

Do you take photos for any occasions other than weddings?

Not really – I love weddings and I’m really happy doing that right now.

How do you keep your product new and different?

I just follow what I like. My album designs are what I would love, the way I shoot and process is what I love and just hope a few others like what I like.

What’s your favourite part about Australian weddings?

Even the most serious Australians have a cheeky side. Stay long enough at any Aussie wedding and you will see what I mean!

Do you use any photo editing software?

CS4/ Bridge – (I like simple)

What are 5 things a couple must consider when in the market for a wedding photographer?

1) Look at lots of photographer’s portfolios

2) Trust your instincts

3) Make time to meet and/or chat with your photographer – you will be spending your wedding day with your photographer. (Make sure you like them.)

4) Communication – look for someone who is realistic and happy to listen and share ideas, problems and opportunities. Look for someone you feel you can trust.

5) Once you decide you love a photographer – book them

Where do you see your business evolving to in the next few years?

This year I am really focusing on getting everything right, consolidating and looking after my clients really well.

As for the future – anything’s possible!
