This couple didn’t need a big, crowded moment to make their wedding feel meaningful. After meeting on a camping trip and building a life that naturally unfolded from there, Jess and Will chose to celebrate in a way that felt right for them. Their ceremony at Iron Gate Estate in the Hunter Valley was kept to family only, giving them the space to slow down and take it all in. A few weeks later, they invited their friends to an engagement party where the real celebration took an unexpected turn! Photographed by Hayley Morgan and captured on film by Lovin Films, it’s a story we’re so excited to share.
For Jess and Will, it was love at first sight! They set eyes on each other for the first time during a camping trip, and once they realised they were studying the same degree, it was game on.
Trips and milestones go hand in hand for Will and Jess. A camping meet-cute, and next up was their European summer chapter. “We were soaking up the magic of being away together when Will turned to me and asked if he could keep doing it forever. Of course, I said yes – without even realising in that moment that it was the proposal. It was simple, heartfelt, and perfectly us,” Jess gushed.
Will wore a custom-tailored suit from Oscar Hunt, with a classic black jacket and pants, a steel-grey waistcoat, and a black bow tie.
Jess wore a beautiful slinky white gown, complete with a halter neck, pink heels and a vintage mantilla veil. “It added such a timeless, romantic touch to the day. I loved the delicate lace detail and the way it tied in perfectly with the classic European feel we were going for – elegant, meaningful, and a little bit old-world,” she explained.
“We also included special family heirlooms in the day, including treasured pearls. Wearing these meaningful pieces made the celebration feel even more personal and connected to our families.”
When it came to flowers, Jess wanted to keep things simple with pink and white orchids. Still soft and romantic, yet cohesive with the solo bloom style. “I wanted something unique and simple, but still with a fun pop of colour.”
Iron Gate Estate in the Hunter Valley was the perfect location for their family-only ceremony, allowing everyone to soak up quality time the whole weekend. “There aren’t many occasions in life that bring both sets of grandparents together, so we felt incredibly lucky to share that special opportunity. We also loved the Italian vibe of the venue, which felt like the perfect nod to Will’s Italian heritage and was especially meaningful after our special Sicilian proposal.”
Jess walked down the aisle with her mum and dad at her side as a slow version of “Two Strong Hearts” floated through the garden. “We also saved the iconic John Farnham version for the end of the ceremony – the perfect way to bookend such a special moment. This song is so us; there’s no need to overthink the emotion, it just feels completely natural and effortless.”
They wanted the ceremony to be natural and intimate, and thanks to their celebrant, Kahlia Wilkin, it was exactly that. “We asked our celebrant to make it personal and fun, without being too formal. Our goal was to capture all the feels and the love, but without the rigid structure or formality,” Jess explained.
As it was an intimate, family-only ceremony, everyone had a special role in bringing the event to life. “The chairs were hired, the decorations were handmade, and the signage from Etsy completed the look. Everyone had a special role to play, from Nonna adding bows to the chairs to family members ironing tablecloths or setting up drinks and nibbles tables for afterwards. We also had a private chef create the most incredible Italian three-course menu to perfectly match the vibe of the venue.”
Their favourite part of planning this intimate ceremony was being able to make the day their own! “Since it was an intimate celebration with only family and around 20 people, the pressure was off, and we could focus on what truly mattered to us. From choosing the flowers, venue, and music to involving our family in special ways, every decision felt personal and full of love. We loved imagining how it would all come together and seeing those ideas turn into reality on the day,” Jess shared.
Spending that time surrounded by their family was incredibly special for Jess and Will. Watching their niece and nephew run around the gardens, their grandparents chatting and their parents sharing a laugh during the ceremony is something they’ll never forget. “Everyone stayed at the venue together, which meant we could fully relax and settle in before and after the ceremony. It was also the only opportunity for my grandmother to see any of her grandchildren get married, so I feel incredibly lucky to have shared that moment with her. Seeing her surrounded by family, enjoying the day, and witnessing all the love and connection made it even more special. It’s a memory I will cherish forever.”
Hayley Morgan captured the intimate ceremony and their surprise engagement party for Will and Jess. Going above and beyond to help them with planning and timing! “She was incredible. Hayley asked all the right questions beforehand, offered her suggestions proactively, and even recommended a top-tier videographer to capture everything perfectly,” Jess explained.
“A few weeks after our ceremony, we had a surprise engagement at Willie the Boatman, and she was the photographer for both events. She felt like a guest rather than a photographer, which made us so comfortable and at ease, and we loved having her there so much.”
The five things that made their wedding events so special included:
“1. Seeing our families truly intertwine,
2. The opportunity to party afterwards and surprise all our friends,
3. Knowing that the day was truly ours,
4. The exceptional weather,
5. And the chance to share a special time together that isn’t always available. Everyone dedicated a whole weekend to us, creating memories that will last forever, and it was especially meaningful for my grandmother, whose dream it was to see us get married. My beautiful granny passed not long after the event, which makes having shared that moment with her even more precious.”
Jess and Will want to leave this advice for couples planning their own celebrations: “Make the day exactly what you want it to be. Don’t feel pressured by others’ expectations and think outside the box about what is really important to you. For us, it was all about family and intimacy, and focusing on that made the day feel truly special and personal.”
A huge congratulations to Jess and Will! And thanks to Hayley Morgan for capturing and sharing with us.
