Daydreaming about long, lazy days on the beach after the big day? I bet you can already taste the pina coladas and fresh coconuts. Maybe that’s just me, but there’s nothing better than planning a tropical honeymoon, especially when you’re in the depths of an Australian winter. Cast your mind to swaying palm trees and twinkling azure water as we get down to the important business of picking the perfect accommodation for a tropical getaway.
Far from the madding crowd
Looking for absolute tranquility? Had the big wedding and want some downtime? Make a beeline for smaller, more remote locations like Turtle Island in Fiji.
The entire island is shared between just 14 couples at a time. Each day you’ll be assigned your own private beach, where you’ll be hand delivered your lunch by golf buggy, along with your favourite cocktails. They’ll even leave you with a radio to call for bottles of French champagne or plates of brownies.
Or at least, that’s how I utilised my radio!
The all-inclusive option
Forget everything you think you know about “all-inclusive accommodation.” At Orpheus Island Lodge in the Great Barrier Reef, you’re sitting down to smashed avocado on toast for breakfast, Middle Eastern mezze at lunch and four course fine dining for dinner, with matched Australian wines of course.
From the moment the helicopter departs Townsville, you won’t have to think about anything except what you’d like to do next. Guests can sign up for the daily activity – it might be a snorkel trip on the reef or a nature walk – or choose their own adventure. Take out one of the dinghies for a spot of fishing, grab a kayak or stand up paddle board off the beach, or simply find yourself a lounge chair by the infinity pool and keep the sparkling wine coming.
Budget busters
There’s a myth that honeymoons need to be big-spend occasions but the truth is it’s possible to bliss out on any budget. Nothing will dampen the mood more than spending all your hard-earned pennies on a splashy hotel, only to arrive and realise drinks by the pool are out of pocket.
Research not just the nightly room rates, but also look up the hotel restaurant and bar menus. If you’re on a tight budget, choose a location where prices are more affordable, and a hotel close to shops and restaurants so you can venture outside the resort to eat.
The Double-Six in Bali is still suitably glamorous, and right on the beach in Seminyak. It’s also a stones throw from all the smoothies and nasi goreng your heart could desire.
Adults only
Now this one is important to a lot of honeymooners – especially if you’re after a kids free experience! The Beqa Lagoon in Fiji is your home away from home when you escape to Royal Davui Island. It’s all about barefoot luxury, so shuck off your shoes as soon as you hop off the seaplane and don’t look back.
Spend your days in the freshly refurbished bure-style villas, grab a kayak and zip around the island, or head out to explore the marine sanctuary. Don’t miss out on the private pavilion dining – no kids menus at this table!
Over-water wonder
Do people say honeymoon, and you say Maldives?
For some of us, it’s the destination synonymous with that very special holiday. Luckily the Maldives has options for every type of honeymooner. There are tiny islands that look like specks from the seaplane, or there’s sprawling sandy beaches that stretch out to a blissful horizon. There are surf camps, snorkel hot spots, yoga retreats, family friendly, eco-friendly – the choice is yours. LUX South Ari Atoll has a little bit of everything. Hide away in your own beach pool villa among the palms, or go straight to the overwater option and choose between your plunge pool or the ocean right underneath. Dine under the roots of a Banyan tree, or head out on a whale shark swim. There’s no bad choices really!
Whether you’re ready to bliss out on your own private beach or taste every local dish under the sun, pack your swimsuit and your sunglasses and you’re good to go.
