Flowers at your wedding do not need to be limited to bouquets and centrepieces. And for The Flower Issue we wanted to show off some of the inspired ideas our weddings and features have uncovered, that add floral beauty to every part of your day. From creative ideas to get your guests all flower fancy, to decor and decorations.
Flowers can be so much more than something pretty too – they can create memorable moments, they can be symbols of what got you to this point, and they can hold so much meaning and honour in the blooms that you choose (check out this post Choose Your Wedding Flowers by Season and Symbolism). Read on for some of our favourite stories and ideas from the Polka pages.
Create A Flower Bar
A flower bar at your wedding can create a beautiful, interactive experience for your guests; lay out fresh flowers and tools (string, secateurs, floral tape) and invite them to get creative. From flower crowns (like the idea picture below) to putting together their own little posies. You can find another example here.
As an alternative? Provide paper and string, and invite your guests to wrap up your decor blooms (or work with your florist to do this) to take home and enjoy well beyond your wedding day.
Have Your Guests Contribute To Your Bouquet
Love the idea of involving your favourite people on your wedding day? One of the ideas we loved from Cathy & Jacob’s wedding was how they asked their guests to come to the wedding with a stem of fresh flowers. Two entrusted people put together the bouquet from the fresh blooms on the spot, before Cathy carried it down the aisle.
Wear Your Flowers
Don’t want to carry a bouquet? But want to add even more flowers to your look? Why not wear them? From flower crowns to floral necklaces, floral sashes, floral earrings and necklaces. Flowers can become beautiful wearable accessories in so many ways.
Eat The Flowers
Edible blooms can be such a beautiful addition to a wedding cake. From adding them to adorn your cake, to decorating your food and cocktails with them. You could even have your caterer work them into your menu.
Make Your Bouquet The Ultimate Sentimental Piece
If you’re a sentimental soul (like us) and have a thing for collections then take this idea from Fontaine & Mike’s wedding. Fontaine had saved all the flowers Mike had given her over the years and combined them into the ultimate memory-filled wedding bouquet.
Adorn Your Transport
Oh, the poor forgotten transport. Once upon a time, even the car used to be adorned with fresh flowers. Where did that go? While you might not be able to decorate your transport quite as much as the beauty below, you could still consider some blooms on your mode of transport (just check into your flowers chosen and get the consent of the car owner to make sure nothing like scratching of the paintwork occurs!)
Two For One Bouquet
If we talk nowadays about ditching tradition, then why have we not talked about the idea that only one member of the married couple typically holds a bouquet? Why not both? At Zach & Josh’s wedding, the couple both carried a bouquet of native flowers and greenery. Bring on double bouquets we say!
Play With Paper
We’re always going to champion flowers of the new variety but there is something a bit special and stunningly creative about paper flowers. It also makes it easy to get large flowers in your choice of colour. Tegan and Miranda opted for beautiful paper flowers in their wedding colours as the backdrop for their ceremony and the result was incredible.
