Making seed paper can get a little messy, however it is a quick DIY gift for your guests that is not only sweet but long lasting too! Giving friends and family something they can grow is a beautiful gesture and one that will be remembered as the flowers bloom long after the celebration.

You can make this as eco friendly as you’d like by using recycled paper, seeds collected from the garden or gifting with degradable pots. Source seasonally appropriate seeds (or flowers to match your bouquet!), knock together a quick screen and you’re on your way to perfectly plantable seed paper!

What You Will Need:

  • Paper to rip up. You can use recycled paper from old cards/wrapping paper/newspaper (ensure it’s uncoated stock, and be aware the colour of the paper will affect the final outcome) or printer paper/card stock
  • Blender
  • Screen. I used a dollar store canvas, with canvas removed and fly screen stapled tightly over it
  • Bowl, water and mixing spoon
  • Clean sponge
  • Heart shaped cookie cutters (or shape of your choice)
  • Seeds
  • Baking dish

Step 1. Rip up your chosen paper into small pieces. Don’t be too neat, the smaller the better. Keep in mind that the colour of your paper will be the combined colour of the paper chosen (ie newspaper will likely turn out grey). I’ve used mostly white paper with a little pink. Pop the paper into your blender (only fill blender half full and do not compact the paper). Cover with water and let soak for 2 minutes. Blend.

Step 2. Once the paper has turned to pulp, pour it into a larger bowl of water. Don’t worry about measurements too much here, as long as it’s very watered down it’ll work beautifully! Mix the pulp and water.

Step 3. Open the seeds and lay out so that they’re easily accessible. Place the screen over a deep baking dish, and lay out your chosen cookie cutters.

Step 4. Using a deep spoon, gently ladle the watery pulp into the cookie cutters. You don’t need much per cutter, so start sparingly. As you go, sprinkle seeds on top of each shape.

Step 5. Once you have done this to all shapes, remove the cutters. Using a clean sponge, gently and firmly press down on each shape to remove the water. You may need a thin implement to loosen the shape from the cloth (go gently). Once the water has been removed, use the most watery pulp you can and spoon a small amount over the top of the seeds. Press again with a cloth. This will seal in the seeds. Place in the sun or somewhere warm to dry.

As a fun bridal shower activity, you could have a wee potting party, providing each guest with soil and a handmade pot to fill and plant their seeded paper in. You can also display these seed paper hearts at each setting with a compostable pot, soil disc and planting stick as a gift or name tag. Handmade seed paper is a beautiful wedding DIY gift – the gift that keeps on giving!
