Nicole & Michael

The deep tones of Nicole and Michael’s wedding we the most beautiful contrast against the grey skies their day held. Emerald greens, indigo blues and deep magentas all combining for beautiful tones of warmth, popping against the bride’s stunning white sequin gown and emerald green gowns of the bridesmaids.

The day, captured beautifully by We Are All Stardust was all about relaxed vibes – right down to the brewery reception. The bride telling “We wanted to keep things relaxed and fun for everyone. It ended up being a big party!”

The happy couple met at university, Nicole remembering “We were introduced by friends in our second year of university, but we didn’t get together until around four years later when we were both single. I actually picked up the courage to ask him out, which was fun!”

Michael proposed on Nicole’s birthday, “Mike conspired with his mum and my sister to have my ring designed (very sneaky!) and then he proposed on my birthday. He wrapped the ring box and hid it at the bottom of an outrageous pile of birthday presents and then he got down on one knee when I started unwrapping it. He knew not to ask me in public because I’d cry too much!”

Nicole chose a white sequin wedding gown from Karen Willis Holmes. “I didn’t expect to walk into a store and fall in love with a completely sequined dress, but I knew it was mine the moment I put it on. My mum and sisters were with me, so that was pretty special.”

Nicole and Michael met before the ceremony for a first look, Nicole remarking “Nat (We Are All Stardust) was such a dream to work with. She made everyone feel at ease and captured the day so beautifully.”

Nicole remembers “My dad walked me down the aisle to an acoustic cover of Bloom by The Paper Kites, sung by Helen Shanahan.”

Nicole and Michael were married by Bev Lawrence, working hard to create a personal ceremony, Nicole tells “I wanted the ceremony to feel really personal, so I actually wrote a lot of it myself. It was kept quite short with no readings, but we did write our own vows. We were adamant about making a marriage equality statement in the ceremony and writing our own vows, but for the rest, we felt quite relaxed. I was more certain about excluding the old traditions that didn’t resonate with us personally.”

The couple chose Kidogo Arthouse, Fremantle for their ceremony, falling in love with the indoor space. Nicole tells “We really love the vibe of Fremantle and we were keen to keep everything close together for the guests. Also, being winter we needed to keep things indoors. We chose Kidogo Arthouse for the ceremony – the building is really old and rustic and they kept all the art on the walls”

The Bloom Romantic styled the beautifully toned floral arrangements for the day. Says Nicole “I gave Bec a lot of freedom with my flowers. There were a lot of natives and greenery in a loose style. We had a wreath hanging on the wall at the ceremony that we re-purposed to hang behind the dessert table and gorgeous long garlands on the long tables at the reception.

I was so overwhelmed with how gorgeous everything was – but if I had to choose something, I would say that the flowers really exceeded any expectation that I had. I could have happily stared at them for hours.”

The windy photos by the water, are some of my favourites from today’s wedding. Beautiful soft tones, windswept hair and intimate moments. Nicole in love with them too. “My favourite photo was one of Mike and I taken during a quiet moment after the ceremony. It was quite windy, so my hair is a mess, but neither of us could stop smiling.”

Reception celebrations kicked off at Little Creatures Brewery. “Little Creatures was a really easy choice  – only 300m from Kidogo, we love the beers there, and the Deck Bar already had a lot of the decor that suited our style with the mismatched lounges, festoon lights and big glass windows overlooking the water. Another big plus was that the venue spanned over two rooms, so one was very noisy with the band and bar, and the other was much quieter for the guests that wanted to sit and chat.” 

For dessert, Sukar created the most amazing table of decadent treats.

The Baker Boys led the dance floor and were a hit amongst the guests. “Our band went above and beyond for us. They had the dance floor going almost immediately and at the end of the night, it was like a mosh pit! They were due to finish at 11 pm, but the band and guests were having so much fun that they looked after us for the last hour. I really feel that they had a huge impact on the night and everyone absolutely loved it.”

“During the reception, a few of our guests mentioned to the band that Mike was a good singer. Right at the end when we thought they were about to wind up, they called him up on stage. He belted out a fantastic rendition of Wonderwall and everyone sang along!”

The newlyweds wanted their first dance to sum up the day, Nicole explains “We chose Bein’ Green, covered by Andrew Bird. It was something a little different, sung by an artist that we both love, about being happy with who you are.”
