From miniature cacti to bright red chilies, boutonnieres (or buttonhole flowers on your lapel) are a great way to make a statement. But before we get started, let’s find out where it all started.
A quick online search has told me that boutonnieres came about in medieval times; a token a female admirer would give a knight to wear into battle. Now, apparently it shows the groom and groomsmen are tied to the bride and bridal party. Another source says they were originally designed to ward off evil spirits, smells and disease.
Whatever their purpose used to be, they’re now a great little way to show your individuality. Traditionally in weddings, boutonniere flowers have mirrored the bridal bouquet, but this is no longer the case. There’s no hard-and-fast rule when it comes to choosing flowers for the big day, so here’s a round up of five quirky boutonnieres to showcase your personality.
Pinwheel or rosette
An easy DIY option, the pinwheel is a great choice to get people talking (for the right reasons). You’ll need double-sided paper (brownie points if this is something meaningful, like a letter from your bride-to-be or movie ticket stubs from your first date), scissors and some glue. Berries
Berries combined with other greenery is a less ‘out there’ option for those who want to break free from traditional flowers. It doesn’t matter whether you use real or artificial berries, but remember, no matter how hungry you get, don’t even think about eating these later in the night!

Mini Succulents
Who doesn’t love succulents? The perfect choice for summer, these bad boys are a great way to freshen up both your look as well as your groomsmen’s. They’re great value for money, won’t wilt and look great. Stems can be wrapped together with wire and if you keep the roots in tact, your groomsmen can take them home and grow them as a permanent reminder of your day.

Chillies
The bright red in chillies stands out brilliantly against black, navy or dark grey suits and are a perfect fit for the chefs and foodies amongst us. Whether you love the spice, grow your own or just enjoy the look, these boutonnieres will be sure to get heads turning.
