Kate & Tyson
There is a lot to love about a classic black tie wedding. The simple sophisticated elegance that suits such a very special celebration. Katie and Tyson chose a Perth black tie wedding for their big day, marrying in a gorgeous beach side garden before celebrating in a waterside venue. They chose DeRay & Simcoe Photography to capture their day.
Kate tells the story of how they met. “We first met on my school leavers in 2005 on Rottnest Island off the coast of WA. My friends and I were staying on a boat, and we met through my friend’s boyfriend at the time – Tyson is 3 years older than me and he had to leave for work the next day. We didn’t exchange numbers so I didn’t think much of it. A few days later I got a message from him and we met for lunch – we have been together ever since – over 9 years when we finally got married!”
Kate chose a strapless gown by Stella York, remembering, “I wore a Stella York Strapless all lace gown with diamantes, with a sweetheart neckline and it was off white. The experience was a bit unusual as myself and Tyson work away on a boat. At the time when I was choosing dress we were based in Seattle so I was shopping alone. There was a lot of photo sending and Skype sessions to my mum back in Perth. At times I was upset that I didn’t have my friends and family with me, but without them there I know it was 100% my choice and no one’s opinions got in my way of selecting my dream dress!”
Kate and Tyson chose Cottesloe Civic Centre for their ceremony, noting, “Cottesloe Civic Centre was perfect for our ceremony – we didn’t want a church and we love the beach and out doors – it is the perfect location with an amazing ocean view and with beautiful gardens. We got married on the stairs which framed the bride and groom and bridal party. It was beautiful.”
“Dolce Ensembles provided our ceremony music. We had a two piece ensemble, a violin and cello playing contemporary music – I walked down the aisle to 1000 years by Christina Perry.”
Celebrations by Sarah officiated the ceremony, Kate remembering, “We wanted our ceremony to be relaxed and personal – Sarah our celebrant captured this beautifully, she introduced us and told our story and made us both feel comfortable in front of everyone. It was also important to have beautiful music playing it definitely made it feel romantic – having the two piece ensemble playing contemporary music made a huge difference. We had so many comments saying how good it was. Ty’s sister did one modern reading called The Art of Marriage. It was short and sweet and included everything we needed.”
Of their photographer, Kate remarks, “Choosing a photographer was a huge decision for us, we didn’t have a videographer so we wanted to make the right choice. We decided on DeRay & Simcoe and met Diane on a quick trip back to Perth in August 2014, straight away we were happy with our choice. She was so lovely. We did our engagement shoot two weeks before the wedding and Diane made us feel so comfortable in front of the camera we knew we had nothing to worry about! The wedding day was perfect and Diane and Eva captured every moment and more! I am in love with our wedding photos, I just keep looking at them. We have also ordered a beautiful leather album that we cannot wait to see. Would recommend DeRay & Simcoe Photography in a heart beat!”
Kate and Tyson chose The Breakwater Akoya Suite and Reid’s Lounge for their reception, noting, “The Breakwater for the reception was chosen as we have had may fun times there over the years – the function room is elegant with great food and alcohol choices. With a beautiful view of the harbour it was the perfect location for us. Being on the other side of the world I relied solely on emails to organise everything – Nicola at the Breakwater was absolutely amazing and the whole Breakwater staff! So helpful and understanding. She sent pictures and ideas of the reception area and was always quick to respond to any questions I had.”
The newlyweds had a very special surprise in store for them, Kate explains, “Tyson’s brother in law was our MC – his daughters were our flowers girls and are our goddaughters. We didn’t know but a video was made of our flower girls giving us marriage advice. It was so hilarious and cute and something that was totally unexpected – it was special having a surprise on a day that I thought I had planned to a tee! ”
Of their first dance, Kate remembers “Our first dance was to – Never Let Me Go by Florence and the Machine. Our first dance was fun! We got dance lessons months before the wedding but when we did our dance we didn’t follow our moves we had learned . We just laughed and sang and danced our own style which was so much fun!”
“When we sent out our wedding invites we included on the RSVP cards a question for our guests. We wanted to know everyone’s favourite song so that at the reception everyone would hear their favourite song. This also stopped people pestering the DJ with song requests during the night!”
