When it comes to the ‘Big Day’, a groom can be forgiven for thinking his biggest input lies in showing up with the rings and not smelling of whiskey! Admittedly, many of the milestone moments, such as walking down the aisle to a song your fiance likely picked because she loved it when she was growing up, are traditionally selected by the bride-to-be which might leave you searching for a way to put your heartfelt stamp on things.

The First Dance song however presents a perfect opportunity for your input, commonly becoming one area for the groom to pay musical homage to his shiny new Mrs as you take to the dance floor for the first time as husband and wife.

So, you’ve decided to flex your creative muscle and impress her by selecting ‘the song’ – but hold up! There are a few things to consider, namely audience appropriation (no matter how many fond memories Sex On Fire holds for you and your partner, you don’t want to be burdened with justifying the choice to Great Aunty Betty…)

I’m here to help, with a curated Top 5 first dance songs to get you on the right track!

1. Into My Arms by Nick Cave

Slow and stingingly beautiful, Cave epitomises the kind of deep love that beacons the beginning of something grand – perfect for your Big Day. Into My Arms is an ode to the transformative power of love and is bound to strike a chord with your lady in all its cinematic glory.

2. Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran

It’s as if this song were created for the first dance. Mr Sheeran and his way with words deliver beautifully succinct lyrics (“Darling I will be loving you ‘til we’re 70”) and emotive accompaniment. The pace is perfect for a slow spin around the floorboards; free of pretence.

3. First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes

Those unfamiliar with the melting vocals of Conor Oberst owe it to themselves to give this one a listen. Bright Eyes recite poetry in this one (“Yours is the first face that I saw, I think I was blind before I met you”) for the kind of unassuming but deeply connected first dance.

4. Can’t Help Falling in Love with You by Elvis Presley

A classic, and for good reason. The King of Rock’n’Roll knew how to make the ladies swoon and this is one of his great early songs that will make her giddy at the knees. As timeless as it is relevant, you’ll score bonus points for pleasing your audience of any age with this heart warmer.

 5. Daydreamer by Adele

This perhaps lesser known gem of divine soul songstress Adele will tick all the boxes. Think butterflies and first love and you have an idea of where we’re heading. Perfect for slow twirling and longing looks, this is an intimate yet universally sweet song that will bring joy to all its listeners.

Good luck grooms, and remember – the most important part is the thought behind your choice; choose something that speaks to you both whilst fitting the mood of the day itself.
