Fiona & Martin
As a flower lover, I am kind of head over heels for Fiona’s incredible trailing bouquet. But then there was more – a cheese table, hand dyed napkins in brilliantly beautiful colours, a flower girl who might have stolen my heart and the most important thing- a love story that is strong, beautiful and so beautifully told through photographs by Objektiv Photography.
Fiona tells their story of how they came to be. “My housemate had offered Martin a place to stay when he first moved to Perth. When he arrived, my housemate was away on business so I picked Martin up from the airport first thing in the morning without knowing him at all. We were friends for a while before we took the plunge to something more.”
Fiona’s bridesmaids wore custom made nude pink gowns with sequinned panels by Chakaleyla.
Fiona chose her wedding gown by Hob Nob Bridal, telling, “My dress was simple and classical. The moment I put it on I just felt happy and like I thought how a bride would feel. I love the clean cut lines and the embellishment around the waist – and most of all I felt comfortable, I was able to move around with ease.”
Botanica Naturalis created beautiful floral arrangements for the day, Fiona telling, “Our flowers were amazing. Anna from Botanica Naturalis was involved early in the piece and took all my crazy ideas and made them a reality. The aisle was a carpet of crunchy leaves with a hanging arbour at the end, the flowers in my hair were something out of a fairy tale and the bouquets were full of beautiful colours and sparkle, framed by native greenery.”
Fiona and Martin married at Brookside Vineyard, Fiona remarks, “We chose to have the ceremony and reception all at the vineyard as we didn’t want parts of the day cut out with traveling from one spot to the other, plus the venue was perfect for both. Brookside Vineyard is a small boutique winery with a gorgeous outlook, amazing wine and a fantastic restaurant – The Vineyard Kitchen. The converted wine making shed was perfect for an intimate reception. After eating there one Sunday afternoon we knew this was the spot we’d get married – if only for the food and wine alone!”
Of her walk down the aisle, Fiona remembers, “We had a jazz duo (Rick Webster and Allira Wilson) sing and play “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” by Elvis. The words said it simply and Allira’s vocals added to the beauty of the moment. They played later into the day as well – beautiful music!”
Suzy Thom officiated the ceremony, Fiona remembering, “Our ceremony was beautiful, such joy! We both surprised each other with the honesty and love in our vows and we laughed and cried and smiled till our cheeks hurt the whole way through. Our celebrant, Suzy Thom, made sure we crafted the whole thing to feel just like us. We didn’t want it to feel orchestrated or formal and it wasn’t. It was just warm and insanely happy!”
Fiona recalls, “One of my bridesmaids collected old wooden chairs off the side of verge collections for the ceremony – amazing dedication to her role!”
Post ceremony, guests celebrated with drinks and cheese – Fiona telling, “My love of cheese came to the day as well. Elizabeth from The Little Deli, Guildford catered five specially selected cheeses with all the extras to go with them for the drinks between the ceremony and the reception, which the guests are still raving about! Mladen our photographer had a hard time keeping me for photos afterwards as I knew I was missing out on them!”
Of their photographer, Fiona tells, “Objektiv Wedding Photography is a Perth based boutique studio, comprising a husband (photographer) and wife (editor + designer) team. Mladen from Objektiv Photography – what a professional. We are both not the most comfortable in front of the camera but he made sure he got what he needed from us and we were so grateful when we saw the photos. He caught the day perfectly.”
There were so many parts of the day Fiona treasures. “Hand picked flowers arriving from Martin on the morning of the wedding, Dad walking me down the aisle, seeing each other for the first time, laughing in the vines with our groomsmen and bridesmaids, our cheeky little flower girl, the amazing speeches from our loved ones. It was such a happy happy day and we fully experienced these moments with each other.”
The magic floral arrangements by Botanica Naturalis continued to the reception inside The Vineyard Kitchen, Fiona remembering, “Anna hung a 4m swing of flowers over the wedding table that made all my dreams come true. Place cards were eucalyptus leaves with names written in gold. She added amazing touches everywhere you looked – even on the cake! The great thing was they didn’t go to waste, we stripped the place bare at the end of the night and sent our guests home with them.”
A three-tier naked wedding cake was a special gift to the couple. “My maid of honour was a complete angel and made our wedding cake, which was so tasty and looked awesome.”
Fiona wanted the reception to be light and bright, so she dyed each napkin herself, telling, “I felt like a crazy person, ombre dipping napkins all the colours of the rainbow the week before the wedding, but they looked amazing! All the different colours lining the tables, quite a few of the guests nabbed a bunch to take home”
Fiona notes, “The wedding was small, just 60 guests, and we wanted it to feel warm and intimate, when we said our vows we wanted it to be with the people who knew us and loved us the most. There wasn’t a theme as such, but it was colourful and full of delicious things to eat and drink, with touches of the beautiful WA bush that we love. We wanted it to feel like a relaxed happy gathering of all the people we loved, a celebration of the things in life we enjoy, and we think we achieved that.”
Of their first dance, Fiona remembers, “This was funny. We danced to Ben Fold’s “The Luckiest”, however the music malfunctioned and it just kept getting louder and louder…everyone was laughing, especially at our MC who emerged from the music controls looking incredibly flustered after she got it under control!”
Congratulations Fiona and Martin! Thank you for sharing the beautiful moments of your day with us! Thank you also to Objektiv Photography for sharing today’s wedding with us!
