Happy New Years Eve! It’s a tradition on Polka Dot Bride that every New Years Eve we round up our favourite celebrity nuptials of the year (see 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007). I don’t know about you but I think 2014 saw some of the most stylish celebrity weddings we’ve seen in years and more importantly- brides and grooms bucking trends and really creating a day that looks to my humble eye that was truly theirs!

Here’s my top ten favourites (in no particular order!) of the year that was!

 Olivia Palermo & Johannes Huebl

I think everyone just about fell over themselves when they realised the bride wore shorts and a cashmere jumper! The stylish Olivia Palermo chose Carolina Herrera to create her wedding day look for her marriage to Johannes Huebl and completed her look with blue shoes from Manolo Blahnik . Johannes chose a white suit from Marc Anthony to match his bride.

The two married with just their closest friends in a New York park in June, having been set up by friends – they wed after six and a half years together.

Lauren Conrad & William Tell

Lauren Conrad wed her beau William Tell in a September wedding at a rustic style Californian vineyard.  The bride, who wore a custom couture gown by Mark Badgley and James Mischka dressed her bridesmaids shades of soft pink from her own Paper Browns fashion line.

The groom and groomsmen wore tuxedos, the reception taking place under a marquee with plenty of candlelight. Special touches were out in full force – each piece of crockery different and carefully chosen by the bride, signature cocktails on arrival, gift bags filled with locally sourced wine – even down to a close friend performing the ceremony.

George Clooney & Amal Alamuddin

The world was abuzz when George Clooney wed Amal Alamuddin in Venice in September. His bride Amal wore a gown designed by the late Oscar De La Renta, the groom in a black Giorgio Armani tuxedo  with customsied cufflinks gifted by his bride to be.  The couple wed in front of 100 guests during celebrations spanning three days.

Jessica Simpson & Eric Johnson

Jessica Simpson wed Eric Johnson at a Californian ranch in front of 275 guests in July. With the bride wearing a custom made gown by Carolina Herrera in gold and the groom a John Varvatos in grey, the bride and groom chose a colour palette of blush pink, blues and golds. Each bridesmaid wore a different gown in a different hue from designers like Marchesa, Jason Wu, Temperley, Carmen Marc Valvo and Carolina Herrera.

The couple chose the bride’s father to perform the ceremony with the couple’s children as flowergirl and ring bearer. The reception, styled by Mindy Weiss took inspiration from Great Expectations with masses of flowers dripping from every corner of the space.

Sarah Harris & Tom Ward

We have to acknowledge the beautiful Aussie celebrations that happened this year and I loved the understated elegance of Sarah Harris and Tom Ward’s wedding in Sydney!

Sarah chose a lace Johanna Johnson wedding gown, her husband to be donning classic tails with the bridesmaids in black. The pair married at the chapel of St. Ignatius’ College before a midday reception at Royal Sydney Golf Club.

Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka

In the month of September, Neil Patrick Harris wed David Burtka in a beautiful ceremony in a castle in Italy.  Choosing an intimate number of guests, the pair, who have been together for ten years chose Italy as the location for the destination wedding as it was the also the country they visited on their first trip together.

The pair danced their first dance to Kelly Clarkson’s  “A Moment Like This” as fireworks lit up the sky.

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt

I think the wedding of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt has to go down as having one of the most uniquely personal wedding gowns I’ve seen – the couple’s children drawing pictures which were later embroidered onto the bride’s gown and veil by Luigi Massi of Versace.

The couple wed at  in the chapel of Château Miraval, their estate in France creating a relaxed and fun day for their six children – the day just as much about them as it was about the newlyweds.

Solange Knowles & Alan Ferguson

If there was  a queen of wedding style this year I think Solange Knowles may have just been it. November saw Solange marry fiance Alan Ferguson in new Orleans. With no less than two stunning wedding outfits for the bride, (who chose a Humberto Leon for Kenzo floor-length gown and cape for the ceremony) the couple started their wedding by making their entrance on white bicycles.

Post ceremony, guests dined at two long tables on a four course feast before being driven in three party buses to Esplanade Street where dancing began, continuing at the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Poppy Delevingne & James Cook

Poppy Delevingne & James Cook wed  in a traditional church service in May at  St Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge, London. Poppy, wearing a custom gown by Chanel chose to have 17 bridesmaids and flowergirls (dressed in white) and the celebrations continued in a formal reception to which they were transported by Kombi vans. The after party continued at Chiltern Firehouse.

The pair held a second wedding in Marrakech combining their mini moon with a major party. The second celebration had a much more relaxed vibe, the bride choosing a more relaxed gown – white embroidered with blue flowers created by the creative director of Pucci- Peter Dundas.

Kaley Cuoco & Ryan Sweeting

Kaley Cuoco & Ryan Sweeting who chose New Years Eve in California for their wedding day made sure their 2014 started with a definite bang! The bride wore a stunning red gown up until the 10pm ceremony for which she changed into a pink Vera Wang ball gown. The groom chose an all black ensemble.
