Katy and Ty’s Urban Industrial Style Wedding

When Katy and Ty found a brewery that suited them to a tee for their wedding location, they set out to carry through the industrial, urban vibe through to the rest of their wedding day. Marrying in a museum – surrounded by the architectural delight of the building and dining with guests at food stations amongst the beer making machinery, they celebrated in a way that reflected their personalities and paid homage to their life together.

Katy tells the story of how they came to be. “We met four and a half years ago where we work at the Melbourne Cricket Club. I had been working there for 12 months in our communications department when Ty started a year later working as a groundsman looking after the MCG. We met on his first day when he was introduced to everyone around the office and we both remember it vividly. He went home that night and declared to his housemates when they asked how his first day at a new job had gone, that he’d “fallen in love”! After that, we crossed paths at work a few times and started chatting and within a few weeks we seeing more of each outside of work before we officially started dating!”

Katy wore a strapless wedding gown from Mariana Hardwick with shoes from Williams and jewels from Stephanie Browne.

Katy’s bridesmaids wore different nude pink gowns, Katy remarks, “I didn’t have a “maid of honour” as each of my girlfriends mean so much to me and no-one was more important than the other. Instead they each had a special part in the day. One stood next to me at the alter, one was a witness and signed our marriage certificate and the third was responsible for Ty’s wedding band and handing it over to me when it was time to exchange the rings.”

Flower Temple created the floral arrangements for the day.

Katy and Ty chose their ceremony location second, marrying at Melbourne Museum. Katy tells, “Once we had the brewery, we wanted somewhere relatively close for the ceremony for ease of getting between locations. This took a little longer to find until my Mum and I happened upon the Museum Victoria stall at a bridal exhibition. I’d never even considered the museum as a possible wedding venue but it was such a unique, yet simple venue which was exactly what we we’re after. It also had the added bonus of a very easy, and just a beautiful, indoor option in the case of bad weather on the day itself.”

Katy walked down the aisle to “A Thousand Years by Christina Perri – performed acoustically by our brother in law’s cousin who performed the perfect rendition!”

Guests waved flags at the conclusion of the ceremony, Katy remembering, “I had ordered ribbon wands with our own personal message written on the flag through Etsy. The colours of ribbons complemented our subtle colour theme of navy blue, champagne and white. They were given to everyone at the ceremony to wave once we had been declared husband and wife. They made for some wonderful photos and added that extra special personal touch.”

Katy loved, “Having our closest family and friends who we hold dear there to celebrate and share all the joy and excitement of the occasion with us. Our families also helped make the day special by being involved in different ways. Ty’s brother was one of his groomsmen, and his sister sang one of our favourite songs during the ceremony. My brother was our MC and my mum and dad helped with making so many little things for the day.”

Of course there had to be photos at the place they met!

Of their photographer, Katy remarks, “A photographer myself in my spare time, it was important to me to find the perfect photographer who would capture our day exactly the way it happened and was a lifelong reminder of all the little details and emotions experienced on the day. We wanted someone who would photograph the day in a journalistic style with a lot of natural, candid moments. Our photographer provided the perfect combination of natural looking posed photos and behind the scenes, detailed shots whilst not imposing unnecessarily and letting the day unfold naturally.”

Katy and Ty held their reception at Mountain Goat Brewery. Katy  noting, “We held our reception at the Mountain Goat Brewery. We found the brewery first as we were looking for a inner-city venue that would be convenient for most people to get to and that would imitate our desire for a very relaxed, rustic/industrial style where guests would be able to kick up their heels and really enjoy the night. I found the brewery whilst researching online and the first time we went to view the space we walked in and feel in love immediately. It ticked all the boxes and we practically signed the dotted line there and then!”

There were plenty of DIY elements, Katy remembering, “I collected an army of old jars and bottles, decorated them in either hessian, twine or gold glitter and used them as vases around the brewery. I also collect various photo frames and spray painted them gold to display our menus throughout the room. I also designed and printed our invitations, menus and signage at the museum and brewery. My Dad also made our wooden letterbox which we used for our wishing well and also put together wooden boxes for my to fill with various toiletries to leave in the loos for our guests to utilise.”

The couple used a dictionary as a guestbook, Katy explaining, “My sister-in-law also gave us the brilliant idea that instead of a traditional guest book, we source an old dictionary which guests could write in. The idea was to find a word they felt described us, circle it and then write their well wishes next to it. It was so special reading through the dictionary the next day finding all the lovely comments and what words people chose! Some guests also left some wonderful surprise messages!”

The favors were truly personalised to the newlyweds, Katy tells, ” I love all the little details that went into make our day ours. Our favours were little pots of home grown grass to reflect where we first met at the MCG. We also gave all our guests a bottle of Mountain Goat beer as we wanted to showcase that not only was it a great venue, but they make great beer!” Katy’s mum made a chocolate mud cake wedding cake.

“A memorable moment for us was when we arrived at the brewery and instead of going through the normal entrance, we surprised everyone and came through the roller door. The cheers from everyone was so uplifting and there was a sea of ribbon wands being waved in celebration and excitement. We were so happy to be newly married and really being able to celebrate with our family and friends.”

Guests enjoyed an incredible feast, Katy explains “Our caterers, Fred and Ginger Catering, were nothing short of amazing. They delivered an amazing catering experience which wasn’t sit down and wasn’t cocktail food. Instead we offered food stations around the room, each a different cultural experience. And the food! WOW! It was the most delicious food I’ve ever tasted at a wedding and I’ve still got guests telling me months afterwards just how good it was. And on top of the food, all the staff were absolutely wonderful and so friendly.”

Of their first dance, Katy recalls, “Our first dance was to Labrinth’s “Beneath your Beautiful”. We’d heard it on the radio not long after we’d gotten engaged and we really like the lyrics as well as the song not being a typical, slow, first dance song. We didn’t have any dance lessons, rather had a few quick practices of some general dance moves together at home the day before the wedding!”
