Matt and Roberta

Matt and I wanted our wedding to be a true reflection of our style as a couple, while also creating a fun, beautiful afternoon and evening for our guests, with less emphasis on ‘wedding tradition’ and more of our own ‘loves’ incorporated into the day.  Our wedding style was rustic, pretty, whimsical, country, with a touch of vintage, with many elements of the day DIY’d by us and our families. Due to my business Green and Bloom, I have a very big love of flowers. I wanted my floral arrangements to be a major part of the overall styling of the day as I feel fresh fragrant blooms add an extra dimension to the mood created at an event. Plus, I was lucky enough to have some of my favourite spring blooms to work with; Poppies, Ranunculus, Helliborius, Green Goddess, and Andromedia to name a few.  In the end I used 27 different types of flowers at our wedding.

I had my dress made by Penny Lane Bridal and can’t thank Rebecca enough for all her help through my dress planning stage.  I also had my hair and makeup created by the girls at Locks and Lashes, who created perfectly the soft relaxed style I was after for my hair and makeup. We were also very lucky to find our photographer Karen Buckle, who we trusted completely in her extensive talents and ability to take amazing photos capturing the moments in the day, and details of our wedding in a truly beautiful way.

We had difficulties sourcing a vintage style car through a car hire company as our wedding was in the peak wedding season of spring and everyone was booked out over six months in advance.  We were fortunate to have a friend of the family allow us to use their car for the afternoon.  It was a mushroom pink Holden wagon with all original everything – we fell in love with the car as soon as we saw it!

Roma Street Parkland was our choice for ceremony and we were married at Palm Tree Court on the hill, which is surrounded by bright coloured gardens and Crepe Myrtle trees which create a beautiful backdrop. We hired white folding Americana chairs and a rattan isle runner from the lovely Perin of Outdoor Occasions.  The other styling elements for the ceremony consisted of hand strung fresh bloom garlands for the aisle as well as the backs of the signing chairs and stand alone vintage style birdcages filled with jugs and tea pots full of fresh spring blooms. We had a drinks stand lined with drinks dispensers full of iced homemade lemonade, a cocktail of Orange and Galliano, and rustic breads and dips.

My favourite moment, was setting eyes on Matt when we arrived in the car.  I could see he was so nervous and excited, with a huge beautiful smile on his face.

My other favourite moment is when our daughter decided to run circles around us during the ceremony, she was having so much fun and stole the show for a couple of minutes, and it was so lovely to be able to share such a special event with her.

Our reception was held at Melange Café at Roma Street Parklands, which we fell in love with as it’s a very classically styled venue with two beautiful chandeliers within. The venue was perfect to convert into our fun, spring rustic wedding style. Flowers adorned the tables and were created and styled by Green and Bloom, using a mix of old vintage vases, jugs and bottles along with more modern glass and ceramic vessels. Lace and twine detailing was also wrapped around many of the vases, with Hessian table cloths and a scattering of vanilla scented candles finishing the table setting.

My talented sister Cynthia made the wedding cake which consisted of alternating levels of rich dark chocolate mud cake, white chocolate mud cake and orange and almond cake, and was served for dessert along with homemade cookies and brownies which Matt’s mum had made.  I made a whimsical spring fresh flower cake topper to dress the cake, using a mix of blooms used throughout the day.

Our guest presents were homemade jams, made by Matt’s mother who is a jam making queen.  She made our favourite flavours; pear and ginger, and marmalade.  We had a stamp of our faces hand carved by an artist found on Etsy based in France, using an image from our engagement shoot with Karen Buckle, and used this on the gift tags for the jams.

Guests were encouraged to type us a message on our vintage type writer, which proved very popular with the teenagers.

Some Advice: If you are planning on doing any DIY details, aim to finish them the month before your wedding. As there are so many other loose ends to tie up prior to your wedding date, you don’t want any extra stress. Be realistic about whether you need to hire someone to setup your wedding details for both the ceremony and reception. This way you will know it will be undertaken as you had intended, without having to ask your friends and family for anymore help on the day.

You know better than anyone else what you and your partner’s wedding style should be, so trust yourself and have some fun. There is so much wedding inspiration available these days at a click of a button, be inspired and put your own spin on your wedding details.
