If there’s a feeling that we all experience when we watch a loved one walk down the aisle, its joy.  We collectively take a little inhale, and its just one of many beautiful moments felt across the big day.  To help carry those big and beautiful emotions throughout the day, and to express them to your guests before the day even begins, infuse your wedding stationery with this joyous feeling.  Here’s exactly how you can create joyful wedding invitations with more colour and interesting designs.

Your wedding day is all about you as a couple.  The more you can incorporate personalised and interesting details, the more meaningful and emotional the wedding will be for every person that’s there.  So ask yourself, what sparks joy for you?  What represents happiness and tenderness and the love that you want to celebrate?  Then use your answers to guide your wedding day choices.

Your colour palette is one way to spark a feeling.  Colours combine and layer together to create new emotions in a kind of alchemy, so use an interesting palette to help you express that.  All the elements of your wedding should be part of a consistent colour palette, including the stationery, so if you haven’t chosen that already, here are some ideas you might like to think about.

  • Dig deeper than what’s trending. Think about the colours you both like, what you like to wear, and what’s in your home.
  • Is there a colour that’s meaningful to you? Maybe your family is from a particular area and certain colours represent that.
  • What has caught your eye when you’ve been looking at weddings online? You might like a lot of different styles, and if you’re having trouble narrowing it down, remember that they are likely all beautiful and so there is no wrong answer!  Go with your gut, and talk it over with your partner.

For my wedding, my husband and I started with colours that we liked, and that went well together.  We had a collection of warm colours like orange, pink, and purple, for the flowers, stationery, and dresses, and we paired those with navy blue in the men’s suits, bonbonniere covers, and invitation envelope.  We knew that when these colours came together, that it invited a fun and friendly atmosphere and also spoke of romance and luxury.

I might be a little biased, but I believe that brighter colours spark the most joy.  If you want to bring a little more joy but are afraid to try bolder colours, you can always think of it as an accent colour.  Use it sparingly in your florals and wedding menus, while still keeping a backdrop of greenery, white in the dress and table linens, and clean and simple lines for the styling.

On the other hand, you might love colour and want to go all out! Don’t hold back!  Be true to you on our wedding day.

Try incorporating these specific colours if bringing more joy is your vibe: Bright yellows evoke happiness – think daisies, sunflowers, and sunshine.  Oranges are fun and social, and evoke memories of warm sunsets and tropical fruits.  Bright pinks will bring energy and certainly joy to the party!

If you’re unsure about how to pair colours, you can always hire a wedding stylist, or chat to your individual suppliers about what look you want to achieve, and let them take the lead on how they should achieve it.  I often give my couples a mood board and/or a stationery mockup, which they can take to their other suppliers so that everyone can be on the same page with the vibe.

Designs and shapes can also help you bring joy to your wedding day.  Interesting items bring a little surprise and delight to guests, helping to entertain, and ignite the senses. Rather than going with standard shapes for stationery, floral vases, or even tables, try unusual shapes and décor items your guests will love.  Making pieces interactive will really make them memorable too.  A menu that guests can open, or a table seating chart where they need to take their own escort card, will draw guests in and become a talking point.

Don’t forget, you’re not set in the wording of any of your stationery either!  Your invitations, your welcome sign, your bar sign, your ceremony program, the list goes on – these are all opportunities to write something your guests will read in exactly your voice.  Want to inject a little humour, do it!  Want to include a loving and meaningful quote?  That little inhale we talked about before, it will reappear.

It’s the little details that matter.
