There’s a certain type of magic that only a spring wedding can deliver – a sense that the whole world is coming alive just in time to celebrate love. For Kayla and Nicole, that sense of blooming was everywhere: in the vibrant, unstructured florals that nodded to their playful personalities; in the heartfelt ceremony that left guests “craughing”; and in the private cake-cutting ceremony they shared before everything began. Shot through the lens of Margan Photography and Bedroom Studios, who so effortlessly captured the unscripted magic of it all, Kayla and Nicole’s spring wedding was less about tradition and more about togetherness.

Like any modern Tinderella story, Kayla and Nicole met on Tinder, and after weeks of dry humour, shared memes and a growing connection, Nicole drove an hour and a half to meet Kayla for their first date! “Kayla had to temporarily move into her parents’ house after tearing a ligament in her ankle and couldn’t walk, which put us in each other’s radius.”

This couple didn’t just stop at one proposal – but had two! The first happened as Kayla and Nicole were walking home after a few drinks, and Kayla accidentally let the question slip before she’d even picked up the ring. The second took place a year later, on a weekend trip to Kangaroo Valley. 45 minutes into their four-hour drive, Nicole realised she had forgotten the ring and had to make up an excuse to turn back. “Nicole popped the question in front of the campfire in the rain. It was super cute and romantic,” Kayla shared.

Nicole opted for a custom-made suit with Shane Ave, complete with a lace bodice peaking out under the blazer. “She wanted a suit that wasn’t masculine, which was hard to come by, so she opted for the lace bodice to create a more feminine look.”

Instead of a matching suit, Kayla selected a two-piece bridal set from All Who Wander, featuring billowing sleeves and a flowing skirt. “I ultimately wanted something a little untraditional, but still felt like myself. Most dresses made me feel dysphoric and not like myself, kind of like I was trying to be someone else. But this dress was the only one that still felt like me,” she explained.

Before the ceremony, Kayla and Nicole had a private first look and cake-cutting ceremony, which they loved as it took a lot of the pressure off before the actual ceremony. “It meant we got to do half our portraits, & wedding party portraits before the ceremony, and have a long time together. We got to be at cocktail hour and actually see our guests, which was really nice.”

Black Wattle Florist‘s brief was to create whimsical, fun and unstructured florals – and they far exceeded expectations! “Nicole and I had similar bouquets. We loved the idea of unstructured bouquets and ended up settling on fun spring flowers, including roses, camomile, delphinium, cosmos, etc,” Kayla shared.

“All of our wedding party had different bouquets; each one had one flower from ours, which we thought was kind of special and a little fun.”

Kayla’s favourite part of planning their spring wedding was how much time she and Nicole got to spend together doing it. “During the process, we would have a little date day once a week, where we would have snacks/drinks and organise vendors, chat details & brainstorm ideas. It was time that we would normally just be watching TV or something like that, so it was nice to spend that quality time together instead.”

Adam Peak Country Estate in Broke, NSW, served as their home base for the day, complete with rustic outdoor spaces, a beautiful garden ceremony spot, and accommodations for their wedding party. “We fell in love with it from the moment we saw it; it ticked a lot of our boxes, which were multiple ceremony options, a plan B, close distance between ceremony and reception, onsite photo opportunity, and accommodation for our bridal parties and families. The venue is a rustic-style barn overlooking the Broken Back Ranges of the Hunter Valley. It is also home to a handful of highland cows, and kangaroos are often seen across the property, which is really special.”

To kick off the ceremony, Nicole walked down the aisle first with her stepdad and dad, as their live musician, Isabella McGavin, performed “Can I Shower At Yours” by Amy Shark. Kayla followed with her own dad on her arm as Isabella transitioned into “Video Games” by Lana Del Rey.

The only thing Kayla and Nicole wanted for their ceremony was to tell their story, without any of the boring bits or traditional elements. With the help of their celebrant, Marry Me Zoe, their guests were laughing and crying (craughing, if you will) at her hilarious monologue! “She also surprised us by working with Isabella to tell our love story to the tune of “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, which was hilarious!”

They didn’t include any readings, but they did share their personal vows – where they played a game of shot roulette to decide who would go first!

Nicole and Kayla couldn’t recommend Zoe more, and their guests shared that love. “People could not stop talking about her during cocktail hour, and when they found out she was our MC, they were so excited. She went above and beyond what we expected a celebrant to do, and created a ceremony that truly did feel like us. Her energy is contagious, and it felt like she genuinely loves what she does,” Kayla explained.

“Neither of us liked being the centre of attention, and she made the whole ceremony process so easy it didn’t even feel like we were standing in front of 80 people. From the moment we met her, we both said it felt like catching up with an old friend. Her ceremony set the stage and the vibe that we wanted to continue throughout the day. Our day would have been incomplete without her!”

Another vendor that really stood out to Kayla and Nicole was Belle Music! “Belle was a key part of our ceremony and cocktail hour, and we worked closely with her to create our aisle song (we still listen to what she sent to us to prove). Originally, we weren’t going to have a live artist, and we were just going to use Spotify so we could save some money, but one day, when we were at the pub, we heard her singing and decided on the spot we had to have her as part of our day. She was that good!” They shared.

“She took on so many requests for cocktail hour and learnt some of our favourite songs so we could have songs we love playing instead of a generic list.”

Margan Photography was the incredible team behind these beautiful candid photos. “We first heard about them through our venue, but after doing some scrolling, we found them on Dancing with Her, which kind of solidified the deal for us. They create beautiful, effortlessly candid work and make us feel super comfortable in front of the camera; half the time, we forgot they were there, which was super important for us.”

And while Kayla loves all of the photos from her and Nicole’s spring wedding, this shot of the baby highland cow trying to eat her bouquet really takes the cake!

The top five things that made their spring wedding so special included:

“1. A ceremony that was more than just ticking a box

2. Being present and a part of the day instead of focusing on photos

3. A first look which made the ceremony an absolute breeze

4. Having breakfast together before we separated, we had breakfast and watched the sunrise together, which was a really sweet moment

5. Getting ready with each other’s bridal parties. The day didn’t feel segregated even though we didn’t see each other; we got ready with each other’s bridal parties, so it was kind of like the joining together of two worlds.”

Keeping their guests entertained during the reception was easy – with the combination of Zoe as their MC and the off-the-wall trivia planned, there wasn’t a moment of silence the whole night. “For our guests, we opted out of doing a traditional wedding favour and instead got a second photographer to capture cocktail hour. The photographer then printed the photos onto magnets, and at the reception, everyone was surprised to find their photos on the walls so they could take home photos with their loved ones. We thought this was a really nice detail, and our guests loved the idea.”

To close out the ceremony, Kayla and Nicole had their first dance to the romantic duet “Till Forever Falls Apart” by Ashe and Finneas!

Kayla and Nicole created a wedding day that was every bit as intentional as it was unforgettable – we hope you’re proud of everything you created! Thank you to Margan Photography for capturing these stunning memories so beautifully.
