Falling in love with the idea of a destination wedding? Palm trees swaying in the ocean breeze, cocktails by the pool, ceremonies on clifftops… we don’t blame you! There’s a base level of awe when you’re saying I do somewhere tropical.

At Phuket’s COMO Point Yamu, you can take that level up a notch. Perched on the cliffs above Phang Nga Bay, we’re talking luxury rooms, suites and villas that sweep you up in the views of the Andaman Sea. Throw in five star Thai and Italian dining, plus the famous COMO Shambhala Retreat spa and wellness center, and you’ve got half your wedding planned already!

We chat to Managing Director Andy Kunz about the rest of the details when it comes to Phuket destination weddings.

When’s the best time of year to get married in Phuket?

The most popular time for weddings is during the dry season, from November to April. These months are considered the high season in Phuket, offering great weather and ideal conditions for outdoor celebrations.

What makes COMO Point Yamu a unique wedding destination?

COMO Point Yamu offers a stunning location in Phuket, with breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea and the surrounding Phang Nga Bay. Its contemporary design, combined with tropical surroundings, creates an unforgettable atmosphere for a wedding. The property’s tranquil environment and luxurious facilities offer a perfect blend of elegance and natural beauty, making it an exclusive destination for couples looking for an extraordinary celebration.

Who officiates weddings on site?

The Master of Ceremonies or wedding celebrant will conduct the wedding ceremony – couples exchange vows overlooking the turquoise waters of the bay at sunset. The breathtaking view creates an incredibly romantic backdrop, making the experience even more meaningful and memorable. Please note this is not a legally binding ceremony, but it is beautiful moment in a special place. There are more details for Australians getting married in Thailand here.

How would a couple weave traditional Thai elements into their ceremony?

Traditional Thai elements that can be beautifully incorporated into the ceremony include a Phuang Malai (flower garland exchange), Thai monks offering blessings, and a Water Pouring Ceremony, where guests pour water over the couple’s hands to symbolise unity and good fortune. The couple don’t need to be Thai to include these elements – they can be introduced into any wedding ceremony to bring a cultural touch.

Thai elements can be integrated into the reception too, particularly through the cuisine. The menu can feature traditional Thai dishes such as Tom Yum Goong, coconut red curry with blue crab, and grilled pork neck with lime dressing, all prepared using the finest local ingredients.

Is there an average wedding size?

COMO Point Yamu weddings tend to be intimate, with many couples opting for around 50-100 guests. However, the resort is versatile and can accommodate both small and large celebrations, depending on the couple’s preferences. The maximum number of guests for a ceremony and reception is 150. However, a resort buyout is available with a minimum of 250 guests.

Can you tell us a bit more about resort buyouts?

With a buyout, the entire resort is reserved for the wedding, ensuring personalised service and an intimate, uninterrupted experience. It also allows the couple to design the wedding events and activities exactly to their vision, without external interruptions. It offers privacy and exclusivity for the couple and their guests.

Almost all resort buyouts are for Traditional Indian Weddings, with specific events happening each day – pre-wedding cocktail parties, lunch BBQs, pool parties, spa days, and group yoga or cooking classes. This ensures that the couple and their guests have a well-rounded, memorable experience beyond just the wedding day.

How long do guests stay before and after a wedding?

Guests typically stay for 3 to 5 days, often arriving a day or two before the wedding to enjoy the resort and surroundings. Some stay a few days after to relax and enjoy the amenities of the resort or explore the island.

Thailand is famous for wellness – can you tell us a bit about pre-wedding pampering?

COMO Shambhala Retreat is a perfect place for couples to relax and unwind before their big day. Offering wellness services like meditation, yoga, and spa treatments, it provides an opportunity to centre themselves, de-stress, and reconnect, ensuring they’re fully rejuvenated for the wedding day.

What’s your pick for treatments?

Pre-wedding, I would recommend the Holistic Massage to release tension and the Deep Tissue Massage to relax muscles. Post-wedding, the Revitalizing Facial is perfect to refresh the skin after the celebrations. The Aromatherapy Massage helps in restoring balance and relaxation, making it ideal for both pre- and post-wedding rejuvenation.
