You know it because we’ve never been backwards about it, but colour? It is what makes our world go round. So when the new collection from Malaysian designer Ivan Young landed in our inbox, with pieces in every hue of the rainbow. Well? It’s a happy Monday for us (and you!).
Founded in 2017, this designer has always been about the extra. Feathers (sourced ethically) and crystals, pearls and beading – and all based around a beautiful and luxe, silk foundation. His pieces, and the concept of the brand are based on installation art, rather than fashion itself. Forcing one to look beyond something simple like a skirt, or tailored pants, and re-imagine them in an entirely new way,
2022 sees him launch a brand new collection of 53 designs. And when we say every hue of the rainbow? We mean it. In peachy pinks, lavender and lilac, yellow, soft icy blues, and of course, classic white, the pieces are made using beautiful mulberry silks, sheer chiffon and silk organza and are crafted into everything from skirts and jackets to jumpsuits and mini dresses. There are feathered bodices and sheer jackets, beaded fringed skirts and ruffle necklines. Imagine these walking down the aisle? Or paired together for a mismatched, but oh-so-coordinated bridesmaid look?
Each piece is able to be worn on its own, or easily mix and matched with others in the collection to create your own tailored look. Pair the ostrich feather skirt with a long sleeve silk shirt, a fringed dress with a sheer organza trench. The options are endless, and with the colour and embellishments liberally used throughout the collection, never boring. Our favourites? The ostrich feather-adorned “Garzar” skirt (in multiple hues, like lilac and peach), and the “Silk ruffles” full-length dress; both unusual, both statement pieces and both completely what we’re dying to see someone wear.
