You may be thinking, “South Coast? That doesn’t sound like Byron Bay”. And you’re right. This month we are looking at Byron Bay in all its relaxed, beachy glory… celebrating its richness in culture and aesthetic splendour.
However, it is important for us to acknowledge what is going on in our country, and indeed the rest of the world. The south coast of New South Wales is my community. Like Byron Bay, it’s chill, picturesque, and abundant in hidden spots and trendy cafes run by hardworking people. It’s special, in its own way. And, like every community in Australia, it has been impacted by recent events: bushfires, floods and now COVID-19. With that in mind, we’ve decided to also share this community with you; with suggestions on how to fill a weekend away with your lover – providing a delectable taste test of what it has to offer.
While we know this trip isn’t possible at the moment, perhaps it can be something to look forward to; a day out with someone you love, an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of normality while you rebuild your lives. And hey, if it also supports small businesses to get back on their feet, what’s not to love? We can’t wait to go. Maybe we’ll see you along the way. Look out for each other, lovers. We’re all in this together.
If you and your partner are anything like me and mine, you’ll love starting a weekend away outdoors! This little paradise is a local’s secret, located in Bass Point Reserve. The idyllic bay is the perfect place for a cute morning picnic – you can spend hours lazing in the sun with your lover, a good book and some BYO goodies.
For those who like to live on the edge, a snorkel here will bring you up close and personal with magnificent sea life – a thriving community of corals, sea urchins and fish. If you’re lucky – or at least in my opinion lucky – you may even spot some small sharks, sea turtles and sting rays. Just remember, Bushrangers Bay is an aquatic reserve; fishing isn’t allowed and all swimmers must take extra care to not touch coral or marine life.

What’s a weekend away without a little wine? Two Figs Winery is nestled in the scenic hills between Kiama and Berry. This charming winery is family owned and quite simply, magical. Like most small businesses, Two Figs focuses on quality. The wine is divine, the staff are both knowledgeable and welcoming, and the location is exquisite.
A visit to the cellar door offers wine tasting with delicious food options- cheese platters and more. After your tasting, settle in at one of their tables and enjoy your favourite bottle together, watching the sun set over the hills of Back Forest Road. Is there anything more romantic? And if you want a taste test before you go (trust me, you do), Two Figs Winery are offering 20% off for all online purchases. My personal picks are their 2019 Chardonnay and White Fort.

So, what if you are looking to try something new? If you and your partner love being in the kitchen together, I suggest Valley Cheesemakers. The ladies at Valley Cheesemakers are experts in all things cheese- and who doesn’t love cheese?
A cheesemaking workshop here is a whole day event, with lunch and snacks provided. Learn how to prepare cheese through professional techniques and explore flavours and recipes, behind the gorgeous backdrop of Kangaroo Valley. Valley Cheesemakers cater for all taste buds and levels of experience by offering different workshops for different cheeses: soft white cheeses, mozzarella, blue cheese and more. The best part? Any cheese you make, you take home – if you haven’t already eaten it by the end of the day.
The Hungry Monkey – Berry
At some point during your weekend getaway – in between all the cheese and the wine – you’re going to need a proper meal. Look no further than The Hungry Monkey. This cosy local eatery can be found in the divine little town of Berry. Not only is Hungry Monkey super aesthetic (for all you food bloggers out there), but it also is run by a team of incredible staff who value service as much as they value good food.
The Hungry Monkey offers a huge selection of food – including vegan and vegetarian options- all divinely cooked with both innovation and soul. My personal recommendations? The Orange Blossom Hotcake for breakfast or the Southern Fry Burger for lunch. And hey, if you aren’t planning on heading that far south, they also have a location in Kiama.
