One of a bridesmaid’s biggest jobs before the wedding is to organise a hens day or kitchen tea. This week on Behind the Door, I’m visiting the perfect venue for this, Lucky Penny. Lucky Penny is a unique events space located above a café by the same name on Melbourne’s Chapel St, South Yarra.

“The area of South Yarra, namely Chapel St has been an iconic location for decades,” says Events Manager Briony. “It’s thrived as a shopping and social precinct for many years and showcases such a diverse culture between the retail and hospitality industries that line the street.” Known for it’s fantastic shopping and great bars I can’t think of a better spot for a ladies lunch or cocktail party.

The function space is a beautiful mix of Victorian architecture, including high ceilings and curved archways, loads of natural light and white walls, often referred to by clients as the perfect “blank canvas” for hosting a function. In that sense, the styling options are endless.
“You can opt to hire your own stylist, or you can provide guidelines to which we can outsource potential florists and pop up picnic brunch companies,” says Briony, “Or for an evening function, even minimalistic styling works, just a few florals and candles is all that is needed to light up the occasion.”

With availability at all different times of the day, the space can be hired for a range of unique events including hens parties, kitchen teas, baby showers, engagements and even weddings. I love the long wooden topped bar and feature fireplace, the perfect spot for gorgeous flowers, greenery or candles. There’s plenty of space for extra entertainment with flower crown workshops, photo booths and dessert bars making a regular appearance.

“The quality of the food and the vast options we cater for is something we really pride ourselves on,” says Briony. “We offer anything from roaming canapés, to grazing tables, sit down brunches, pop up picnic lunches, external catering, and if you want to go for that ‘wow’ factor, we offer 6ft and 12ft grazing tables, complete with cured meats, cheeses, mixed nuts, fruit, breads and dips. Those grazing tables are popular and for good reason!”
For drinks, there’s a range of packages available, as well as cocktails and even a mimosa bar perfect for brunch time events.
I love a space that can transform into something different for every occasion and I think any bridesmaid that organised an event at Lucky Penny would be in the bride’s good books for the rest of the year!
Ms Floral Says: What a beautiful venue! How great that it can be styled any way the bride-to-be and bride tribe choose. The catering and drink options sound absolutely amazing too.
