Celebrating all things Australiana this month means we’re covered everything from rustic styling to clean and modern outback settings! We adore all the homegrown beauty this theme has brought and today continue adding to it with these native plant seedlings, wrapped in a simple and natural hessian.
For the plant lovers amongst us, this is double the fun, as it means a visit to the nursery! Using plants native to Australia is a thoughtful way of adding to our flora and supporting the local environment, as well as aesthetically adding a rustic and textural element to your styling. Super easy and fun to make, these seedling favours are adaptable and quick to put together – a winning combination!
What You Will Need:
- Australian native seedlings, tube stock – look for a nursery that specialises in local natives
- Small brown paper bags, two per favour
- Small hessian bags – try Kmart or Spotlight
- Gardening gloves and a spot to work that you don’t mind getting a little dirty!
Step 1. The day before packaging your gorgeous seedlings, give them a big drink and soak them thoroughly, allowing them to drain well. Each seedling will be different in terms of root structure, so be prepared to lose a lot of soil, or none at all. Try to keep as much soil around each seedling as possible. Gently remove seedling from tube, and cleanly place inside two brown paper bags. The paper bags will hold a little moisture, and hold the soil together more firmly. You can, of course, leave the seedling in its plastic packaging if the entire tube will fit in the hessian bag.
Step 2. Firmly scrunch the paper together to ensure no soil escapes the paper bag, and place the paper bag into the hessian bag, sealing tightly. You can adapt these favours by adding your own personalised or coloured ribbon or twine.
That’s it! Two easy steps! Once the bags are firmly closed, the plants will likely survive 2-3 days, but they are best packaged as close to your event as possible, to keep them as happy as possible. Add a care tag with some personalised details and add ‘Australian themed wedding stylist’ to your resume! Once you’ve put them together, place on each table setting or place in a crate for guests to select one to take home and plant a gorgeous souvenir of your day!
