Helen & Matt
It is always a pretty certain thing around these parts that I fall head over heels for unusual colour combinations and the soft blue with peach and raisin at Helen and Matt’s beautiful Western Australian wedding set the scene for a day that was so classic in it’s elegance and modern in the finishing touches. The couple chose IZO Photography to capture their day.
The newlyweds set the scene with the story of how they met. “We met at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) while both studying there. Helen was in 1st year, Matt was in 4th year and we met because we were both asked to do backing vocals for a friend’s performance.”
Helen chose a Wendy Makin gown from Samantha Wynne , telling ” I chose it because I wanted something I would feel comfortable walking in, without feeling ‘over the top’. I wanted a dress that was representative of me. Samantha was so lovely and made me feel at ease. From the moment she met me she was able to determine what dress would suit my personality and when she brought out the dress I knew it was ‘the one’.” Her bridesmaids wore pale blue Alannah Hill dresses.
Floral Army created the stunning bouquets that featured blue thistle and peach roses. “Annita at Floral Army was also so kind and generous and went above and beyond what we were expecting.”
At the church, the WAAPA Gospel Choir set the scene for the guests.
Helen and Matt married at Holy Rosary Church , explaining “We chose this church because it had a beautiful open and inviting feel, situated in a suburban area away from the hustle and bustle. Afterwards, we realised that Helen’s Great Aunt was also married in the exact same church.”
For the processional, Helen and Matt explain “We chose a song called ‘Thin Air’ by Aqualung. We also chose to have it performed live by our musician friends.”
“Our ceremony is something we will never forget. It was incredibly special for us – big thank you to Father Joe who married us, for being so down to earth and injecting a sense of fun in the delivery of the ceremony. He was such a genuine and kind man who made sure it was a personal ceremony. We filled out questionnaires in the months previous and he included this in our ceremony. We had a Catholic ceremony and chose readings from the New Testament (read by Matt’s siblings and some of our closest friends). Even though it was the biggest moment in our lives, we didn’t want it to be too solemn, we wanted it to be a joyous occasion. We had a lot of live music; including the WAAPA Gospel Choir, and our friends Allira Wilson, Josh Dyson and Luke Cleland played for walking down the aisle and signing of the registry (‘You and I’ by Stevie Wonder.”
Of their photographers, Helen and Matt comment “Our photographers were Jimmy and El from IZO Photography. There aren’t enough words to say about how amazing these guys were. We had done a fair bit of research on photographers and kept coming back to IZO Photography simply because of the incredible work they’d done. It never felt intrusive and we just got to be ourselves for the whole day. Nothing was posed or uncomfortable. We prioritised photography on what we would spend more on at our wedding as we knew they would last a lifetime and we’re overjoyed with the finished product.”
Matt tells “Our favourite part of the wedding planning was that none of it was done by just either Helen or I. We did absolutely every part of it together. So it was a really special time for us to spend together before getting married.”
Helen and Matt chose The Deck – Little Creatures for their reception. “We had a specific idea in mind for our reception venue, we knew we didn’t want a typical sit down 3-course formal dinner reception. That would have made us uncomfortable. The Deck Bar was a perfect venue for us. It is on the water, they provided pretty much everything decoration wise (even some of the staff were dressed up in Harry Potter attire ), the food was exactly what you get at Little Creatures (which we love), It had 2 huge rooms, one for eating/speeches/sitting down and the other was a bar with a dance floor looking out on to the water, plus an outdoor section as well. It was very private and we were made to feel as if we were at home. The staff were outstanding and it couldn’t have gone better.”
With Helen adoring Harry Potter, it was only natural the reception was filled with touches of magic – right down to golden “snitch” cake pop favours by Cake Pop Creations. “It was also a necessity to include Harry Potter references here and there as Helen is the #1 HP fan in the entire world. Matt proposed whilst on a trip to Harry Potter World in Orlando, Florida. We had ‘Cake Pop Creations’ make ‘Golden Snitch’ cake pops as the guest gifts which sat on top of their name place card that said ‘You’re Quite The Catch’. Our table seating plan (Maurader’s Map), table names (all from Harry Potter i.e. Gryffindor Common Room) and our gift box (Harry’s trunk he takes to Hogwarts) were all references to Helen’s first love.”
De La Rosa Cakes made a beautiful three tier wedding cake. “Our wedding cake maker, Amy from De La Rosa Cakes & Cupcakes: she was the nicest person in the world and created the perfect cake for us (and it was so delicious).”
The first dance was performed by friends, Helen and Matt explaining “Our first dance was really special because our talented friends Mia Wray & Angie McMahon flew over from Melbourne to play and sing one of Mia’s original songs called “Forever Falling” which we love. Because we are both musicians, it was really special for us to have so much live music as a part of our day.”
Congratulations on your marriage Helen and Matt! Thank you for sharing your day with us! Thank you also to IZO Photography for sending today’s celebration our way.
