It’s the time of year when shops are filled to the brim with tinsel and baubles and crazy Christmas shopping expeditions are unavoidable. I seem to find myself craving the joy of giving handmade, thoughtful gifts – and creating these festive gold candles was the perfect place to start!
I chose a polka dot theme (naturally!) with three different designs, and slightly different application techniques. These candles would make the perfect hostess gift for upcoming Christmas parties or look beautiful down the centre of a table if you are hosting your own festive dinner party. For your wedding, you could easily personalise for your bridesmaids with their initials or even create your own favours with votives and a custom pattern suited to your wedding decor.
The process itself is a simple one, and only a few materials are required. Take your time with the creative process, enjoy unleashing your creativity and perhaps try a few practice candles before you decide on the final design.
- 3 x plain white candles in glass (I found these Fig & Vanilla scented ones at Kmart)
- Craft glue with applicator
- A fine paint brush
- Gold glitter
- A large bowl
- A drop sheet
What to do:
Step 1. Remove any stickers from the candles. Put a drop sheet down, or even better, go outside. Even when you’re being careful, glitter has a tendency to get everywhere.
Step 2. Using the craft glue applicator, dispense a small drop of glue onto the candle glass. Repeat in a random polka dot pattern.
Step 3. Using a teaspoon, spoon glitter over the glue polka dots. Ensure you have a bowl or plate underneath to catch the excess.
Step 4. The glitter has a tendency to stick to the glass, even where the glue is not. Using a fine, dry paintbrush, brush the excess glitter into the underneath bowl.
Step 5. For a larger style polka dot, use a fine paintbrush to apply the glue. Take your time with drawing the polka dots freehand. Repeat steps three and four to apply the glitter.
Step 6. Neaten the edges of the polka dots with your fingertip or a dry paintbrush. Allow to dry. Voila!
Ms Chinoiserie Says: Oh, I do love these; they’re so sweet! Polka dots are may favourite (!), but how pretty would they look with your bridesmaids’ initials on them!
