What I love about writing ‘Behind the Door With’ is that each time it’s different and every space is unique. This week ‘The Door’ is more of a trailer door as I meet Mary and visit her gorgeous mobile coffee business, Pookie May Coffee. Based in Melbourne, but of course willing to travel, Pookie May loves to be on the road and is ready to serve coffee and treats in any wedding location imaginable.

“I searched for a little while to find the right trailer” Mary tells me. “I wanted something small enough so I could run it on my own, but it had to have lots of character and vintage charm.” Pookie May was a perfect teardrop style trailer and at almost seventy years old she certainly has that vintage feel.

Converting a trailer to a coffee cart was no easy feat and Mary tells me they had to follow lots of council rules and regulations with the fit out before they could even think about aesthetics. At only 1.5 metres wide they had to fit a lot into a small space!

Mary chose the name Pookie May to reflect the nickname she called her daughter when she was growing up and had the trailer painted in the original colours of light blue, red and white. Pookie May can now be found selling coffee, hot chocolate and treats at local markets, fundraisers and events but is especially at home at a wedding.

Mary tells me she is passionate about Australian made products and chose a coffee called Zentvels which is grown in Byron Bay to serve to her customers.  There’s also Mork hot chocolate and Calmer Sutra Chai tea.

I love the idea of having Pookie May at a morning wedding and Mary says that Pookie May is even more popular for evening service after dinner and often as a pick me up before guests drive home. Mary can even organise some yummy cookies and treats to serve your guests to go with their hot drink.

In the future Pookie May Coffee has plans to pop up at lots more weddings and has even kept wedding vendors going with coffee at some exciting wedding workshops. She sure is a busy and much-loved little trailer!

Ms Chinoiserie Says: I love this little trailer; what a fabulous idea to have Pookie May Coffee arrive for a smooth short black at the end of the night! So much fun!

About Amelia Waddell of Make Your Day Wedding Styling: I’m a wedding stylist and proud store owner who loves to chat weddings with everyone and anyone! I love to talk shop with other business owners (particularly over some chocolate cake!) and am the first to try and have a sticky beak behind the scenes of any event. My free time is spent ‘investigating’ new cafes, stores and events.
