Pete and Holly
I was never the type of girl that wanted to get married but after Pete popped the question my inner DIY, scrap booker, crafty bunting lover self exploded into our lives!
Pete and I both knew we wanted a fun, unique and relaxed wedding. We are lucky enough to live on a very picturesque bush block in Margaret River so we decided to utilize the stunning bush back drop and get married in our garden among our sunflowers and thriving veggie patch.
I rang my Mum a few days after the proposal and said, “I think I’d like a kind of country style, rustic chic, naive, vintage-y, eco friendly, DIY, handmade wedding with a twist of fanfare carnivale” (Bridezilla much?!)
Without skipping a beat my Mum said, “Great, what’s the colour palette?”
We chose pinks, oranges, frushias and yellows and spent the next 399 days making everything from the invites to the name tags (for 120 guests). We had ‘Wedding HQ’ set up at the back of my mum’s house and we filled it with handmade bunting, tissue pompoms, wedding banners, hundreds of doilies and old hankies that we dyed pink and orange, table numbers made out of old school rulers with little black boards glued to them and loads of love hearts on sticks painted and decorated, which we placed along our dirt track driveway to welcome our guests to our ‘wedding wonderland’!
Walking down the garden path arm in arm with my mum and dad was a truly special moment. As we got closer to all our guests everything just hit me at once and I thought” I’m going to burst in to tears or into laughter…’. The laughter came and I just couldn’t stop. My mum was nudging me and telling me to stop it but I just couldn’t! Seeing all my friends and family there, all of them laughing along with me, my wonderful husband, my two little brothers holding the rings (they are 6 and 11 years old)… it was such an incredible feeling and it made for some pretty funny photos!
We had hay bales and picnic hampers, homemade chutney favors and 3D heart shaped glasses, typewriters and giant jenga and a dessert buffet table with the most amazing cake pop tower wedding cake. The most amazing day that ended with all the guests lining up and high fiving Pete and I as we drove off into our future.
Ms Gingham says: “This is the most joyful wedding! I absolutely love the image of Holly in fits of laughter! It’s so gorgeous to see that overwhelming emotion come out in such a happy way!”
Holly says: “My name is Holly and I was NEVER going to get married! After my husband proposed something changed in me and I suddenly found myself obsessed with wedding sites( yours being my favourite!), wedding blogs, wedding magazines- all things wedding!”
Hi there. What a beautiful DIY wedding. I would love to know how you made the backdrops…
Hi there,
For the white banner we used a long piece of wide pipe and then cut strips of all kinds of white material and tied them at the top.
For the coloured banner we used two broomsticks and again cut then tied the material at the top. We also tied little butterflies to the strips.
The white garland across the top is made from cup cake wrappers. I just threaded them through a string and turned them outwards once they were hanging. Very quick and easy!
Your backdrops are gorgeous Holly! I love the carefree fun if your wedding. I wish I was there!
Many thanks Holly. My wedding is in January and I am trying to hide an ugly area. The white backdrop, how did you fix the legs. i.e how did you make it stand?
Hi Andrea,
We had a friend build A like frames at the back and a straight piece of wood across the top then attached the pipe with cable tyres to the wooden frame.
The other banner we hung little ropes from the ceiling and threaded it around the broom stick handles.
I would suggest investing in a heap of cable tyres, a hot glue gun , staple gun and some pinking shears! With these 4 things you can DIY anything!
I just had to smile all the way through – what a joyous wedding!
This is great, Holly !
