From the moment we were engaged (and well, if I’m being perfectly honest, a little while before that) I knew that I’d love to do an engagement shoot. For those who don’t know about them, it’s a fairly new concept, whereby the bride and groom-to-be do a photoshoot that they can then use to celebrate their engagement, include with their wedding invites or save-the-dates, or just experience as a way of getting used to having their pictures taken!
One of my biggest inspirations for doing an “e-shoot” came through reading an article on another wedding blog. The piece was written by an Aussie artist living in the UK called Thaoski, who directs engagement shoots for couples recently engaged, coming up with a beautiful storytelling concept that captures all the emotions associated with being engaged, in a creative and memorable photographic story. She’s pretty much a creative genius!
Unfortunately for us, our budget didn’t include flying Thaoski out from the UK, so we chose to style our own e-shoot, but I tried to keep all her tips in mind. You can actually download a free booklet from Thaoski’s blog called “The 7 Biggest Mistakes Couples Make with Their Engagement Photography”.
For our engagement shoot, we decided to get a bit retro, and do a 50’s style shoot. We’re both big fans of dressing up, and have always had themed birthday parties. (Our wedding is actually going to be themed too… but more on that later). Plus, I had started collecting a number of fabulous replica 50’s outfits, so it was a great excuse to pull some of them out of the wardrobe! We found the perfect venue in Sydney: Manhattan Super Bowl, a Route 66 styled bowling alley and old school diner, complete with a bright red Pontiac and an Elvis statue!
Now that we’ve been engaged for a year, it was a nice way to celebrate the anniversary, and to get us a little bit more comfortable about being in front of the camera. It was a lot of fun, and I would highly recommend the experience, as memories are extremely precious and any excuse to get dolled up, is a good one in my book!
Stay tuned for more updates on our wedding!

Ms Gingham says: This is so cool! Love the 50s theme because it’s got the vintage nostalgia with a little bit more fun.
