The gorgeous bridal gowns from Sydney designer Amanda Garrett never fail to leave me wanting more. Her simple elegance and eye for design leaves it’s mark on every gown she creates. I’m thrilled to have Amanda share her story and wisdom with us today!
Can you tell us a little about your background and what led you to a successful career in bridal and occasion wear?
I studied design and fashion in Sydney then spent time in London creating inventive garments that were admired and treasured. When I returned to Sydney I realised the scope for beauty and inventiveness in creating bridal gowns for modern brides.
Where do you find your inspiration for a collection? Do you find that something particularly resonates with you and that will be the starting point?
The starting point is always the body, then the fabric choices. it builds up from there. I strive to create gowns that make the woman look beautiful – in a fresh way that stands out as breathtaking beauty, within the simplicity of the piece.
What fabrics do you most enjoy working with? Do you find you sometimes design a dress around a particular fabric that inspires you?
I enjoy beautiful quality, silk fabrics. Yes the fabric most certainly inspires the dress. I have been working with a divine lace recently and its exciting for me.
What accessories do you think suit your current collection?
Nothing heavy, we stock minimalist veils and gorgeous vintage earrings and bracelets as well as Elizabeth Bower and Samantha Wills jewellery.
You are blessed with an intuitive awareness of emerging trends in fashion. What do you see as the coming trends in bridal wear?
Soft Romantic gowns with modernity as well as a Vintage statement.
Your current range features a minimalist line. Is this something suited to summer specifically or can it be worn across the seasons?
It can be worn all seasons on the whole. We stock a fabulous vintage inspired arctic white fake fur stole which instantly alters the season.
What should a bride consider before choosing her gown?
Be open to try on styles you may not have considered. Every cut is different – you may be surprised.
What can the groom and bridal party do to compliment a bride’s dress, in terms of their wardrobe?
The bridal party should wear colours that suit the bride, be careful not to overpower her with too much detail on bridesmaid’s dresses. If the groom wears a beautifully cut suit and shirt – he can’t go wrong – for men, keep it simple.
What do you love about Australian brides?
Their sense of freedom.
Can you provide some tips for brides when buying their wedding dress?
- Try on dresses wearing heels
- Look at your jewellery options while you are choosing your dress – the jewellery can be a powerful compliment to pull your look together.
- If you are wearing strappy shoes – don’t have bright coloured toe nails.
