Fiona and Troy

I love this afternoon’s Brisbane wedding. It’s a lovely mix of classic touches with whimsical romance. The couple injected a lot of little details to make their hotel ballroom reception theirs – from printed handkerchiefs to special ceremony moments.

Fiona remembers how she met her husband. “We met in high school at the tender age of 14. The connection we had then is the same we have now, we are very blessed that 12 years later when we finally tied the knot, the love we have for each other is the same as it was when we first met. He is my soul mate.”

Photos today are by Studio Sixty Photography. It’s lovely to see how they’ve captured all the little details so creatively, telling the story of the day.

The invitations were designed by the Fiona, a graphic designer and printed by Bespoke Letterpress Boutique (see their beautiful suite here).

Troy wore a suit from Kenneth Blake while his groomsmen wore suits from Roger David.

Fiona wore a gown from Pronovias “It was an off-white Pronovias Barcelona Gown. It was made and imported from Spain. I saw it online and bought it without even trying it on – when you know, you just know… right!”  And paired with with royal blue suede Yves St Laurent heels. Donna Sullivan styled the girls makeup.

The flowers (styled by Mary Rose Loff) held special meaning to the couple. “There were many special details in our wedding in particular my bouquet – I had my Nana’s rosary beads wrapped around the stem. Due to illness and old age my grandparents weren’t able to make our wedding.  I also had a single peach coloured rose in with all my ivory roses to symbolise Troy’s mother not being able to share our day with us. He also wore the same coloured rose – this way they were all with us the entire day.”

Fiona says “We had both the ceremony and the reception at the Marriott Hotel in Brisbane City. The staff did an exceptional job on the day, very professional, efficient and accommodating to not only Troy and myself but to all our guests.”

Fiona walked down the aisle to “Moon River” by Frank Sinatra.

Fiona ‘s emotions got the better of her, but her father was well prepared. Fiona recalls “The entire lead up to the wedding I was telling my dad and Troy to make sure they hold it together when I am walking down the aisle as if I see them crying, that would then only set me off and of course I didn’t want to ruin my makeup. Unbeknownst to me, I was the blubbering mess, the second I entered the room I was a mess, complete mess, very emotional haha – thank God my Dad had emergency tissues!!”

Natasha Lewis officiated the ceremony.

Jason, the photographer tells of a special ceremony moment. “Fiona and Troy wrote a message to each other on the day on their beautiful, vintage handkerchiefs (which they used for their Save the Date cards) and sealed it in an envelope to read to each other on their one year anniversary. “

Fiona’s bridesmaids wore brilliantly coloured gowns, Fiona remarks “They were bought online through two separate stores, I wanted bright colours that popped and the girls bouquets were an added accessory – they looked stunning.”

The reception was full of DIY vintage touches. Fiona recalls “We made all the signage, stationary, the petal cones, apple garlands that hung off our chairs, we made all the desserts (apart from the cake), tomato relish favors, the lips and moustaches, and my dad made our rustic wooden letterbox!”

Fiona and Troy worked with Amini Concepts to pull their day together. Fiona remarks “I worked extremely closely with Amini Concepts when putting my wedding together, they are fantastic. Whenever I would give Kelly an idea that I saw and/or thought of she was like, we can do that! It was a match made in heaven really, Kelly and I were always on the same page. It’s always nice to have that comfort in someone like a wedding stylist, as you want to make sure your vision is perceived correctly for your special day.”

The couple had a romantic first dance with music provided on the night by Spin City Sound. Fiona says “We changed it up a bit and had our first dance as soon as we arrived to our reception. Our first dance was to “Love You ‘Till the End” by The Pogues. We both fell in love with this song when we heard it in the movie ‘PS. I Love You’ and it stuck with us. It’s a beautiful song. Perfect.”

The speeches are always one of my favourite moments and Troy’s had a little synchronicity. Fiona remembers “During Troy’s speech, randomly, fireworks started going off along the Brisbane River. It was like clockwork, magical really, another wedding along the river must have had them, naturally, we all pretended like they were meant for us haha – it was great!”

The couple had a wedding cake from Cake That, with a  cake topper bought online through Etsy.

Mini cheeseburgers kept guests on the dance floor before a sparkler exit.
