After I got engaged, there was a whirlwind of creative ideas swirling in my head. My now husband was a word-worker at the time, and I have been a graphic designer for the past 6 years. It was important to me that our wedding was a reflection of our creativity, imagination, craftsmanship and of course love for one another. After we secured a date at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in NYC, I knew that I wanted to go with a Victorian Botanical theme as the wedding reception was in a Victorian Glasshouse surrounded by beautiful Lilly pads, gardens and fountains. As a designer, most of the time you design for other people, and this was really one of the first times I got to design everything with my vision in mind, from start to finish. So I wanted it to be over-the-top. The first piece I worked on was our Save the Date postcard. I wanted to play around with the vintage theme with the use of costumes, signs and type treatment, as well as pick iconic areas of NYC.
The Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island, and the Central Park Boathouse. Over Labor Day weekend, we put our ‘costumes’ together and set out to each location, camera and tripod in hand. We set the camera on a self-timer and ran back and forth like crazy people trying to achieve the perfect shot. For the Coney Island photo, we even got stopped by a police officer for holding a sign that said “Save,” thinking that we were about to protest. Eddie had 2 hotdogs and a basket of fried frogs’ legs to reward his hard work. 🙂 At the Brooklyn Bridge, we rented a 70’s blue bicycle from an antique bicycle shop and rode it through Chinatown, with my dog Chum Chum in the front basket. It was a hot day and we treated her to an ice cream cone after the shoot. For the final photo at the Central Park Boathouse, my mother in-law was kind enough to join us on the opposite side of the boat and snap the picture. The 3 photos were stacked on a jumbo postcard so that each of the signs could be easily read. On the back was the info and a link to our website. Here’s a look at the corresponding website.
The images that were set on the homepage worked as an animated gif so they kept rotating different photos.

Ms Gingham says: I love the effort and planning that went into these Save The Dates! I’m speechless … can you imagine what the guests would have thought when they received them? See Shana’s Invitations here too!!
Shana says: “My wedding was this past August in Brooklyn, NY. I made over 160 hand-made cloth books which were mailed in boxes as invitations, a retro save-the-date postcard featuring self-timed photographs, surprise tissue programs, a hand painted ketubah, and more. I designed each piece myself and assembled everything with the help of my now, husband Eddie as well as other family members in the hopes of making something truly special and unique for our guests on a most wondrous occasion.”
