to celebrate our first valentine’s day as husband and wife last year, we thought we would start a new tradition: to always spend valentine’s day with each other, in our home, and cook ourselves a fabulous four course dinner (tastier than anything we’d get at a 4* restaurant – or so we told ourselves!). and it was the best thing we could’ve thought of, as we can’t wait to do it again this year!
Pelting rain. An little bit of shelter overlooking Clovelly beach. A picnic basket goodies. And the future Mr. Sometimes you don’t need money to make it special.
We are getting married next year – so, for this Valentine’s Day, we are taking time together for a lazy afternoon in the sun and to put pen to paper – to write down our goals, hopes and dreams for the future.
our first together was: breakfast in bed, lunch in bed and dinner in bed. the first proclamations of love from both of us and promises to be together forever…
Just the two of us, with the beach to ourselves, we sat on the foreshore and had fish & chips while watching the sunset over the rocks…just magical
Our first Valentine’s Day… we had known each other for about ten months at this point, there was attraction but nothing had happened so far.
He came over for dinner and a DVD. I went upstairs to change, when I came back downstairs a bunch of pink rosebuds had appeared on the table. They had been in his car but he did not bring them in at first.
I was excited. He likes me!
We had dinner and watched the DVD, he finally left without even trying to give me a kiss.
I was confused, maybe he doesn’t like me.
Thankfully we got our act together a week later and three years on we are engaged!
Our favourite Valentine’s tradition is relaxing out on the balcony of our little unit with a bottle of wine, some candles and some local takeaway noodles. Nothing fancy, but it’s perfect for us! (and no one has to do the dishes!)
Mine was last year. I happened to be in town for that day (my fiance, Chris, lives in New York and I’m currently in Seattle), so I hatched a plan. I called all of my friends up and got them to fold origami icosahedra and other polygons. I then called his boss to request permission to stage them and he was so excited that he offered to create a meeting just to get my fiance out of the office. In the interim I folded as many pieces as I could so I could flat-pack the lot on the flight.
When I got to New York I secretly finished all of the origami construction and, while Chris and his boss were out, all of us swarmed his office and covered the desk with origami. Then we built a ring of newspaper around his chair. After we finished we got a call from Chris’ boss and hid, cameras ready.
He didn’t even see it coming – the look on Chris’ face was priceless.
After we proudly displayed our work, we took turns juggling origami and talking before going back to the apartment and playing video games. Chris said it was one of the best gifts I ever gave him, and the extra origami pieces were distributed to everyone.
My favorite Valentine’s Day was last year. My now-fiance Andy and I had spent weeks trying to come up with something fun to do, to no avail. The day was fast approaching and I got to feeling a little disappointed that we might not be doing anything for the holiday. He had never been the romantic type, so I joked that maybe he should just go out with the boys that night [hoping he wouldn’t take me seriously, of course].
On Valentine’s Day morning, I woke up to a dozen roses, a box of chocolates, a teddy bear, and a bottle of champagne. A card read: “For the most beautiful woman in the world. Be ready at 7:00 – Dressy attire.” I asked, “Where are we going?” He said, “Nowhere,” with a big grin.
He said he was going out for the afternoon. Feeling a bit anxious with anticipation, I put on my best dress and waited… At 7:00, there was a knock at the door. No one was there, but I found a note on the doorstep that said, “Walk into the backyard.”
We live on a lovely little lake. The pathway from our back porch down to the dock was lined with white votive candles. At the end of the dock there’s an adorable stone table that sits right on the water, under a big, beautiful oak tree. All the candles led me down to that table, where he stood, dressed in a suit (the first time I’d seen him in one!).
He had strung white lights all through the oak tree. The table had a white linen tablecloth, silverware, plates, and a vase full of roses. He had set out champagne and ordered a meal from our favorite Italian restaurant… He even uploaded all of our favorite songs to his iPod and plugged it into a portable speaker. I love romantic big band tunes from the ’40s, and there were plenty on the playlist. He slow danced with me for the first time, underneath the twinkling lights he’d strung above us, and the stars reflecting on the water.
He joked about how cheesy all of it was, and admitted he’d secretly spent a month planning it. It was hands-down the most romantic night of my life thus far… Is it any wonder why I’m marrying him? 😉
(Sorry that was so long, haha! I guess I didn’t want to leave out any little detail.)
Our new home has a view of the sydney harbour bridge & the city. My paertner said “We have this view forever, but I want you forever”. Bring on the waterworks 🙂
Sitting on the South Perth foreshore with my man eating fish & chips drinking wine. Good food, good conversation, good company. Doesn’t get any better than that.
This will be our first Valentines Day together in the same house, same city, and same state. He’s in the Navy so we’ve been apart for half as long as we’ve known each other. I’m so excited to just have him here.
A relationship isn’t a bit thing – it is a million little things all wrapped up together to make the love in your life as fulfilling as can be.
My fiancee and I always abide by this principle for Valentines Day. We don’t need to spend big bucks on dinners and flowers. It is all about the quick stolen kiss, the morning cuppa made for you in bed, the head massages to send you to sleep, cooking a favourite meal and spending time together doing something spontaneously fun! It is these moments you share together that make your love stronger…
oops i meant big not bit!
sitting on the beach eating cupcakes with my bf … my fave valentines’ day moment
My favourite valentine’s day moment was last year when my partner tried to bake me a valentine’s cake.
It was a saturday and I had gone to the gym, as a surprise he tried to bake a chocolate cake with pink icing while I was gone. I returned home find a chocolately blob with a reddish tinge on top and lots of icing around the sides. He didnt pre heat the oven so it was mostly raw on the inside and he tried to ice it while is was still warm so the icing wasn’t sticking. It was the best present I have ever got because he made it with love.
This Valentine’s Day will be only the second my fiance and I will be celebrating together. Last year we decided to always give homemade gifts for Valentine’s. Last year he made me a beautiful clock – I was seriously impressed. It is hanging on the wall in our bedroom. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with this year!
Hubby-to-be and I met on Valentine’s Day five years ago tomorrow – so it holds a special memory for us.
A close friend of mine wanted moral support to try out speed dating; as did a friend of his. Neither of us expected much more than a fun night out; however, …
We met.
We matched.
And later this year – we marry!
We were traveling but both my boyfriend and I had purchased a Valentines card to give to the other while we were away. Neither of us knew that the other had done it. It was our first Valentines Day together and we’d bought each other exactly the same card. That was when we knew it was meant to be!
Baking heart shaped gingerbread cookies with my children and icing them with red icing. That’s true love
I was going to tell you about the gourmet picnic. Where he made caramelised onion and Danish fetta tart, kipfler potato salad with parsley and real lemon juice, I made apple and cranberry chutney, and hommus from scratch. we sipped champagne and played cards as the sun set over the hinterland. But I think back on the day and I realised that our moment was back in bed this morning. I gave him a card and a present. He looked at me, his face in despair – he hadn’t bought me a gift. ‘I don’t deserve this’ he says. I remember thinking that myself. How did I deserve this wonderful man? True love, proper love, means you cherish the fact that you finally found each other, and sometimes shake your head in disbelief. Could it be that I am one of the lucky ones, I’ve found my true love? Yes – we did. The truth is – he didn’t deserve the boxed gift. He deserves so much more. And I have a feeling that we will spend the rest of our time living our lives in a way that shows each other how much we deserve the love we found.
Valentines… 9 pressies in one! A massive box and inside each was an even more luxurious and extravagant gift!
My NOW fiance spoke to my then boss – got me time off work (almost impossible) and flew us to a seaside country town for our first V-day. We absolutely fell in love with it (not to mention each other). 3 years later we moved there in Jan (this year) and V-day this year he proposed. We’re living the dream!
Without telling me, my husband booked a babysitter for the night and drove us to our local beach in time for sunset. We ate fish and chips together out of the paper and washed them down with some champagne from the bottle. We walked along the beach hand in hand and finished with a big kiss in the carpark. We felt like teenagers again!
A night of Romance this Valentines on the exquisite GLASS ISLAND BOAT,
Cruising the harbour fully catered – delicious cuisine, bottomless drinks – please note.
A night of love celebrated on the most beautiful harbour, a night to be envied by all.
A great mood of happy people dancing on the crystal Sydney waters, all having a ball.
Best of all it was my friend’s wedding, Valentine’s celebration of love, guests enjoying perks free.
A romantic night for all couples, without having to worry about spending thriftly.
Two years ago, my then-boyfriend (now fiance) surprised me with an impromptu trip for Valentine’s Day — because nothing’s more romantic than getting away from it all together. We drove several hours to St. Augustine, Florida, a place we had both enjoyed in our childhood, but never together. We had a warm, beautiful weekend of exploring, eating, laughing, and reconnecting.
I arranged a tandem sky-dive for both us – just to show ourselves that we were still Madly ‘Head Over Heels’ about each other!
On a hot air valentine balloon ride, my boyfriend proposed to me, I was on Cloud 9… Literally & Physically!
One Valentine’s he wrote a poem
His words were loving and sweet
The way he expressed his love for me
Swept me off my feet
That simple gift meant more to me
Than anything money could buy
For love is love and it comes free
You shouldn’t have to try.
My fiance is not big on Valentine’s Day (unfortunately!) so every year it is a little bit of a let down in the romance department (he does make up for it the rest of the year though!) I always still get him something little and this year I bought him an adorable little box of love conversation starters. All morning we lazed in bed and asked each other questions from the box such as “The perfect weekend with you includes…” or “When we grow old…” or “I would like to thank you for…” We discovered that we are still learning things about each other after all this time and the best thing is we continue to laugh and dream together.
We had booked a room for Valentines Day at a 5 star hotel, but when we arrived, they told us it was overbooked. We were about to be turned away by the receptionist and the manager came along and told us to follow him. He ended up placing us in the hotel’s luxury suite (which took up most of the floor we were on) and told us that Princess Dianna, Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth and most of our recent prime ministers had stayed in that room. And with 4pm checkout, we had the best Valentines Day ever!
My fiance proposed to me a few years ago on February 9th which isn’t quite Valentine’s Day but pretty close! This year I bought my wedding dress on Valentine’s Day! He wasn’t along, but I still thought it was pretty romantic!
My fiance, Jason, got certified in sailing last November. Since his birthday is also on the Valentine’s Day and I know how much he wanted to go sailing again, I suggested we rent a boat and sail to Catalina Island.
We enjoyed the 8 hour sail to from LA to Catalina Island and were able to see huge pods of dolphins. They were gorgeous and loved swimming next to the boat and we got tons of great pictures.
I never had sailed before, so Jason taught me how to tie proper knots and steer the boat. It was great sharing this together and being able to enjoy just being together with no agenda.
That night I cooked steaks on the boat, which we paired with wine from the vineyard he proposed to me in. Then we capped the night watching The Emperor’s New Groove. Definitely the best Valentine’s Day I’ve had!
i was given a star of my own in the night sky, to name and keep for life, not so all my dreams come true (he said for him it was me with him), just so that even when he is not there I have something to listen to them
Last year, my fiance had went to florida to visit his family for 2 weeks. He was supposed to come back on February 17th, but told me he would have 2 dozen roses delivered to my house. My doorbell rings on valentines day and im thinking the flowers came since i heard “UPS”, but it was him with 2 dozen flowers and a ring! thats when he proposed =D
My fiance and I have our first baby due in a few weeks time. This year for Valentines day he treated me to a pregnancy massage and a subscription to roadside assistance – so that way I never have to worry about locking the keys (or baby!) in the car and he knows I’ll be safe wherever I am. It made me feel so loved that he worries about me while we are apart.
I think my favourite Valentine’s day involved my now-fiance cooking me dinner, trying out a new recipe. The recipe involved various tricky-to-obtain bits and pieces for me unused to cooking things other than the basics (pistachios, odd sorts of cheese, etc etc), and so was a somewhat modified version, which he was very sweetly concerned about. It tasted beautiful (involving chicken and pink grapefruit) and was a lovely, relaxed way to celebrate the day together.
our first valentines day, my partner had to work. He arrived home at lunch time with a dozen red roses, bottle of wine and dinner reservations.
My reply “What have you done?” forgetting what day it was!
This past valentines day weekend was the best weekend of my life. My now fiance took me back to the place where we had our first kiss, and with an open heart and teary-eyes, he asked me to be his wife. We spent the weekend with family and friends, sharing food, stories and lots of laughter. Now we’re trying to figure out how to afford a wedding, but we are loving every minute of planning out our special day. I love your collection (the Frangipani Dance invitations are awesome!) and I would feel so honored to be selected for this prize.
My most memorable V-day would have to be the year I had no boyfriend and was roped into working all day at a deli selling roses and sweets to every couple that walked in! At the end of the day, the other staff member [a male similar in age to me] who had been working with me all day bought me a rose and some chocolate and we went out on a ‘date’ after work to a pizzeria! I got a massive hickey that I tried unseccessfully to hide from my mother and we went on a couple more dates but it never went far! The actual Valentine’s day was nice though and so far that is the most I’ve ever celebrated the day! My current boyfriend [of 3 years now] and I have our anniversary on the 8th of Feb so poor Valentine’s day hardly gets a look in anymore. I have been eyeing your stationary for a while now and perhaps winning some would be the perfect incentive for my boyfriend to pop the question so we get to use the beautiful stationary 😉
This year my better half and I spent the day before Valentine’s Day in hospital as he was in a lot of pain from a kidney stone. They really hurt and I’ve never seen a person in so much pain unless they were in labour. So the following day was a total write off, with him on the couch still rather sore and uncomfortable and me making him his favourite treat, NZ lolly cake. No fireworks, champagne or red roses for us. Just me taking care of the man I love. That is the stuff good marriages are made of and a good way to show someone how much they mean to you.
Favourite memory was when
He proposed on bended knee
It was in the city of Wien
And asked if I would marry thee
This Valentine’s day marks the 5th anniversary of when I first told my fiance I loved him. It was a romantic night in our dorm at college, one that I will never forget (haha). This year we celebrated with a spontaneous Italian dinner-a break from all of the wedding plans. It was nice to remember the real reason we are planning this wedding- to be married to my best friend.<3
