For many couples, the idea of being photographed for an extended period can feel unfamiliar or even nerve-wracking. The key to looking natural in your photos isn’t about mastering the perfect pose – it’s about feeling comfortable, present, and truly enjoying the experience. Today on Polka Dot Wisdom, the talented Leo Farrell is sharing some valuable tips with us on how to feel natural and relaxed in your wedding photos. A photoshoot can feel out of our comfort zone as it’s not something we do very often, if at all. Tension will come from the unknown. There can be lots of variables at play, but most of these can be mitigated beforehand with effective planning. Once this is done, you and your partner will be much more free and open to be in the moment and enjoy the time together during your photoshoot.

1) Select a photographer whose style really resonates with you. Make sure to look at multiple galleries of their work from their website and not just a few images on Instagram.

2) Meet your photographer in person (if possible) to make sure you feel like your personalities gel and you trust them. If you want natural and relaxed photos, ask them how they will achieve this so you know how they will guide you on the day.

3) Decide on the location/s for your photos. Your photographer should lead you on this. If they have previously worked at the venue before, they can provide location examples. If not, they can scout the location and provide options for you prior to your wedding day. This way, you help decide with their guidance which locations you would like as your backdrop to your images.

4) Timeline – with their experience, your photographer should be able to provide you with a realistic timeline for your photos, and how that will fit within the overall running order of the day. Some couples like more time for photos, and others would like less to be able to maximise time with family & friends. It’s important to communicate this to your photographer to best plan for your needs. Some couples also decide to do photos before the ceremony (incorporating a first look) so they don’t have to leave their guests at all after the ceremony.

5) Now that your locations and timeline have been confirmed, and you have a plan with your photographer, you can head into your couple shoot with confidence. All you have to think about is your partner and how happy you are to be together to celebrate your relationship. This naturally puts you in a more relaxed and joyful state.

6) During the shoot, really focus on your partner. Whether you are walking or talking, be conscious of looking into each other’s eyes. Think about and even tell them how you feel about them and what the day means to you. Giving and receiving these lovely sentiments will naturally deepen your connection together. It will most likely prompt a physical response, anything from a smile, glint in the eye, a hand squeeze or a heartfelt embrace. These are beautiful moments of connection that are natural and real, and can’t be faked.

7) In addition to the main wedding party/wedding couple photos, I recommend stepping out with your partner later in the evening for 5 mins for a few extra pics. This is usually after speeches and the first dance are concluded. It’s probably the most relaxed couples feel as the formalities are over and they can reflect on the joy of the day (and may have also had a glass of bubbles or two!).
