If there’s one wedding that will put a spring in your step, it’s Melly and Nat’s charming spring picnic wedding! Picture this: a yellow dress code, a remote-controlled car delivering the rings, and a joyful boat ride. Melly and Nat’s wedding was all about fun, friends, and fresh air—exactly how they envisioned their big day. With jazz tunes, native florals, and their personal flair woven through every moment, this wedding was a perfect reflection of their lively, adventurous spirits. And with the talented CJ Picture capturing every moment, they will get to relive the day over and over again!
Melly and Nat were best friends for over three years before they both realised there was something more between them – and here we are sharing their beautiful spring wedding!
In 2021, Nat had prepared a surprise for Melly’s birthday. With an intimate setting of soft candles and lights in a boutique hotel in Surry Hills, she popped that almighty question.
Melly’s beautiful gown was bought in Guangzhou when she flew back to visit her family. After plenty of food and trying on dresses, she found her dream dress with her besties back home.
Working without a planner, Melly and Nat planned their whole wedding on their own and even designed their own invitations and website!
Jeff from CJ Picture was their photographer for the day and perfectly matched their vibe! “Jeff is so funny and enthusiastic; we loved his work and we are so lucky to have him as a friend as well. It’s clear our foodie bond will keep going.”
One of the most special aspects of Melly and Nat’s spring wedding was how their parents and closest friends travelled from across the globe to be part of their day. “We’re deeply touched and truly blessed by their presence. We weren’t the only ones moved to tears during the father’s speech, and having moms as our witness signing was incredibly special.”
Wattles are some of Nat’s favourite flowers, and since they were also in season, the pair chose a native selection for their florals. And for transport Melly and Nat hired a boutique ferry for their guests, while they took a yellow water taxi.
They had an outdoor ceremony on Shark Island in the spring air, which was perfect since they both love nature and outdoor adventures.
One of their favourite photos was this beautiful shot of the pair walking hand-in-hand down the aisle, surrounded by their beloved nature and cherished friends and family.
The vibe they wanted for their spring wedding was relaxed and heart-warming, like arriving at a spring picnic to meet and catch up with old friends. As the dress code, Melly and Nat asked their friends and family to wear yellow – and they absolutely nailed that assignment!
To bring their rings down the aisle, the duo used a Suzuki Jimny (the same as their own car!) remote control mini that one of their best friends drove to them.
They included nods to their Chinese background throughout the day, having ‘double happiness’ decor in the hotel as they got ready – with lots of red pockets. As well as the red mini dress Melly changed into after the ceremony. They also gave out tea in persimmon-shaped pots as gifts and lucky cookies to enjoy once everyone got off the boat.
Their first dance was to “Cheek To Cheek” by Ella Fitzgerald, as both Melly and Nat are old jazz souls at heart. “Our favourite part was practising our first dance, which was relaxed during the quite intense planning months,” they shared.
As a post-ceremony treat, Melly and Nat brought on Paddock Cafe as a caterer, and they were one of their favourite vendors of the day! “The catering from Paddock Cafe was so yummy, everyone loved it!”
The top five things that made their spring picnic wedding so special were:
“1. A spring equinox picnic on the island
2. A boat for dancing and boozing
3. A noon nap
4. A light rail city walk
5. A lazy-susan style family dinner in late-night Chinatown.”
After their morning ceremony, guests and the couple alike had the opportunity to take an afternoon nap, recharge, and refresh themselves before the dinner reception in Haymarket that night.
The piece of advice Melly and Nat want to leave for future married couples is this: “Enjoy the day and let go of the details—everything will be perfect. Stick together, feel the love, and be surrounded by the warmth of family and friends. Embrace the love and joy, and remember, there’s no need to follow every tradition or fit everything into one day.”
Please join us in giving a huge congratulations to Melly and Nat! You two created such a beautiful spring wedding that radiated happiness. And thanks to CJ Picture for capturing the magic and submitting it for us to share!
