There is a beautiful bright and breezy air to Julia and Seb’s wedding. The golden sunshine by the sea, a colour palette of blues, yellows and reds and a sense that community, that love was on everyone’s mind. The pair, who wanted their day to be less like a traditional and formal wedding, even chose the scene of their very first date for their wedding. And of course, inviting We Are All Stardust along to make sure it was all beautifully captured.
The couple’s paths first crossed on a weekend, when Julia was 16, her parents away – deciding she wanted to throw a party. She remembers “Seb showed up to the party with some mutual friends, and that is how we met. We have known each other for 13 years, and we saw each other here and there, but we didn’t start dating until years later when we ran into each other at a mutual friend’s birthday and we have been together ever since – that was seven years ago.”
The proposal takes place in a beautifully initiated and very special way, on a random Tuesday night at the couple’s home. “I had been at work all day, and I went to a hot pilates class after work so I arrived home looking very sweaty” laughs Julia. “As I pulled up in the driveway, I saw that there were 10 red roses planted in the grass, and I knew what was happening immediately. I got out of the car as Seb came outside with our dog, Beau. Seb had placed a card on each of the roses, each saying something he loves about me. As I finished reading all of the cards, Seb got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was very sweet and very memorable.”
City Beach waterside restaurant Odyssea played host to the occasion, the venue a very special place for Julia and Seb, “Odyssea is very special to us – it is owned by Seb’s family and it was the location of our first date” explains Julia. “Seb brought me to the Odyssea opening party seven years ago where I met all of his family on our first date.
The location is amazing – we had the ceremony so that our guests were looking at the ocean in the background. We also wanted to take advantage of the beautiful WA sunset, so we had drinks on the deck while the sun was going down, followed by a sit-down dinner inside the restaurant.”
Bright, bold and incredibly beautiful; there are no regrets about hiring Studio Rexx to style the wedding flowers says Julia. “I wanted something non-traditional, colourful and sculptural for the ceremony feature. I was so happy with the flowers, Evana is very talented and a dream to work with. She prioritises using Australian Grown flowers.”
Julia chose “You Send Me” by Aretha Franklin to play as she walked down the aisle with her father. “I can’t listen to that song anymore without getting emotional. My mum was originally supposed to walk me down the aisle as well, but she injured her leg a few weeks before and chose to take a seat before the ceremony started.” It also happened to be Seb’s favourite part of the day. “The part I remember most about the day is Julia walking down the aisle and the emotion surrounding that moment. I was feeling very nervous up until that moment but relaxed when Julia was up in front of everyone with me.”
“Seb wore a dark green Calibre suit” tells Julia. “He wanted something a bit different from a black tux which is why he chose the green. It was important to him to get something he would wear again.”
Julia chose a Martina Liana gown, that she had customised, sharing “I loved the sleeves and the neckline on the original gown, but I wanted to change some details to make it more ‘me’. I changed the fabric to a sand washed silk, changed the shape of the back, added a long tie to the back, and removed some buttons.”
“We wanted our ceremony to be very personal” explains Julia, “Tina Buri was our celebrant, and she did an amazing job at keeping the mood light-hearted and fun, but bringing in some emotion when needed.
Seb comes from a Greek family, and some of his family members had never attended a wedding ceremony outside of the Greek church before. We were surprised that a few of them told us how much they loved our ceremony afterwards.”
“It was really important to us to write our vows. We wanted the day to be personal, and including vows was one of the ways we achieved this. It was really special saying vows to each other which we had both put so much thought into. Saying them in front of our friends and family made it all the more special.”
This was a day well and truly planned together, says Julia. “Planning everything together was nice. It was great knowing that we were creating a day that we were both really excited about and selecting everything together made it all the more special.
Selecting the menu was one of the more fun wedding planning activities. We couldn’t pick one favourite vendor – we were so happy with all of our vendors and would choose them all again in a heartbeat if we had a choice.”
The bright and breezy mood was captured in all of its glory by photographer Nat of We Are All Stardust. Explains Julia “We picked Nat because all of her photos seemed to capture the couple’s personalities and style. She did not disappoint – we love all of our photos and she made us feel so at ease and comfortable on the day. Nat is a true professional and a lovely person.”
“It is your day, so make the day what you want it to be and don’t worry so much about traditions or other people’s expectations” advises Julia. “There is a balance sometimes when it comes to pleasing yourself and pleasing family, but if you include all of the details that make you happy and exclude anything which isn’t important to you, the day will feel more special.”
“We loved having all of our friends and family together in one place. That was a surreal and amazing feeling – especially knowing that many had travelled so far to be there for the day. The speeches were all great and very memorable. We had a mixture of friends and family speaking, and they were funny, heartfelt and very special to us.”
For the first dance, Julia switched into a gown by Camilla and Marc, as the sounds of “Nothing Can Change This Love” by Sam Cooke began. “We had practised for a few weeks before in our living room – we are not professional dancers, but we managed to copy a simple routine from YouTube and we pulled it off on the night.”
“We made sure we included Greek dancing after dinner – everyone got involved and had a great time with that.”
A big congratulations to you both Julia & Seb. Thank you for sharing your beautiful wedding day with us today and thank you to We Are All Stardust for sharing today’s beautiful images.
