Deciding what flowers to use in your wedding arrangements can be a daunting task – hundreds of varieties, seasonal availability (hello, peonies!) as well as matching your colour palette and aesthetic. Below I’ve listed a few of our favourites that we love to pair together for our wedding arrangements – some for their delicious scent, others for their lasting power and all for their beauty! They are flowers that ‘play well’ with others, meaning that no matter what style you’re going for, these gorgeous blooms will be the stars of the show. Alexandra Stringer – the Wedding & Events Coordinator at My Little Flower Shoppe – brings you “Perfect Pair: Blooms That Work Together In Wedding Arrangements”…
Lisianthus
A soft and delicate classic. Lisianthus, with their long, graceful stems and furled buds, add movement to bouquets and arrangements. Popping a few lisianthus stems in each of your pieces can breathe life into them, creating a truly elegant and timeless look.
Peonies
The flower every bride wants! And for good reason, although their short availability window means that few people can get hold of this magnificent bloom. Peonies have a rather narrow range of colours (mainly pink, red, burgundy and whites) but they certainly make up for it with their explosion of fluffy petals and sweet, crisp scent.
Carnations
This is a controversial flower to be adding to this list! A lot of people consider carnations to be the poor man’s rose or something that should have been left in the ‘80s. However, they have such a great selection of colours that can’t be topped by many other flowers. Not to mention they have incredible longevity!
Ranunculus
These are my absolute favourite. They are available from late winter to early summer and come in a multitude of colours – deep burgundy, bright orange, soft salmon pink, classic white and every shade in between. While these beauties don’t have a distinct scent, their multi-petalled heads add a gorgeous soft texture to each arrangement they are placed in.
Roses
Of course, they are number one on the list. They are just simply too hard to top. When it comes to variety, roses absolutely take the cake. Whether your aesthetic is a whimsical garden fairy or luxe avant-garde, there is a rose for you. If fragrance is important to you, a garden rose such as Victoria’s own Grandiflora roses or the classic David Austin is a perfect choice.
There are hundreds more flowers available each season and each brings its own unique look, texture, and scent to an arrangement. Chat with your wedding florist – there’s nothing we love more than working with seasonal products!
